The main objective of the present investigation is the study of Protestant societies of Presbyterian court that settled down in the nineteenth district of Zitácuaro, between the years of 1877 to 1901. In this sense, to understand which were the elements that in conjuncture allowed the Success of the Presbyterian societies of American origin within the society of Zitacuaro and the consequences of its dissemination, was the main element from which the research emerged. One of the intentions was to identify the mechanisms of control by which the Mexican State to carry out the secularization of the society, which led the clergy of Michoacán to foment the religious intolerance of the Catholic sectors against individuals who practiced a religion different. In this sense, the Catholic clergy, when seeing the religious field invaded by doctrines that, from their point of view, tried to "de-Christianize society", devised a whole set of elements tending to counteract the development of religious secularization and, consequently, Propagation of new forms of religiosity that broke with the religious unity offered by Catholicism. As part of a dispute over the religious field between Catholics and Protestants, it was sought to understand what the defense mechanisms carried out by the Presbyterians in union with the liberal sectors of the district of Zitácuaro, to counteract the Catholic assault against them. It was an essential point to understand how the union between Liberals and Presbyterians contributed to the development and strengthening of social networks of lay character, locally and nationally, within which Presbyterians radicalized and developed a feeling of anticlericalism and anti-Catholicism.
El objetivo principal de la presente investigación es el estudio de las sociedades protestantes de corte presbiteriano que se establecieron en el distrito decimonónico de Zitácuaro, entre los años de 1877 a 1901. En este sentido, entender cuáles fueron los elementos que en conjunción permitieron el éxito de las sociedades presbiterianas de origen estadounidense dentro de la sociedad zitacuarense y las consecuencias de su diseminación, fue el elemento principal del cual se desprendió la investigación. Una de las intenciones fue identificar los mecanismos de control mediante los cuales el Estado mexicano para llevar a cabo la secularización de la sociedad, los cuales llevaron al clero de Michoacán a fomentar la intolerancia religiosa de los sectores católicos en contra de individuos que practicaban una religión diferente. En este sentido, el clero católico al ver invadido el campo religioso por doctrinas que, desde su óptica, trataban de “descristianizar a la sociedad”, ideó todo un conjunto de elementos tendientes a contrarrestar el desarrollo de la secularización religiosa y por consiguiente, la propagación de nuevas formas de religiosidad que rompieron con la unidad religiosa que ofrecía el catolicismo. Como parte de una disputa por el campo religioso entre católicos y protestantes, se pretendió comprender cuáles fueron los mecanismos de defensa que llevaron a cabo los presbiterianos en unión de los sectores liberales del distrito de Zitácuaro, para contrarrestar la arremetida católica en su contra. Fue un punto esencial entender de qué manera la unión entre liberales y presbiterianos, contribuyó al desarrollo y fortalecimiento de redes de sociabilidad de carácter laico, en lo local y nacional, en cuyo seno los presbiterianos se radicalizaron y desarrollaron un sentimiento de anticlericalismo y anticatolicismo.
