"Considering the systems for goat production, it is of interest to know the ability of native vegetation as forage species and their effect on physico-chemical characteristics of goat milk. The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition of forage species associated with a semi-arid rangeland and its relationship to the chemical composition of goat milk in a native extensive rangeland farming system. The study was conducted at the ranch El Bajio, La Paz, México. During 12 months samples of plant species consumed by the goats were collected, and int the same period samples of milk were taken. Results showed a significant effect of seasonal changes along the year on the chemical composition of rangeland forage species in the area. With the exception of crude fiber content, the chemical composition of the milk of goats showed variations throughout the year in all variables assessed. During the spring season there was a widespread consumption of cactus flowers and pods, avoiding a dramatic decrease in the nutritional composition of the diet. Goats grazing freely selected and consumed a diet that was variable in the species composition of plants among the seasons."
