"The present work of research contains studies in which the differences in response to salinity on germination, emergency, growth and establishment of seedlings, and vegetative growth stage of cowpea genotypes were compared under laboratory, growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. To determine the response in each stage of the growth, the genotypes were exposed to saline stress by means of the addition of NaCl and the next criteria were used as comparative approaches: (A) morphological variables: 1) length, fresh and dry weight of aerial part, 2) length, fresh and dry weight of roots, 3) leaf area, 4) number of trifoliate leaves and 5) total biomass; (B) ratios as: 1) rate and percentage of germination, 2) rate and percentage of emergency, 3) root/shoot dry weight ratio, 4) root/shoot length ratio, 5) survival ratio; (C) physiological traits: 1) net assimilation rate, 2) crop growth ratio, 3) relative growth rate, 4) transpiration, 5) stomatal conductance, 6) leaf temperature, 7) chlorophyll content, 8) succulence, 9) relative water content and 10) water potential; (D) ionic content: 1) absorption and distribution of Na+, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, P and N in the different organs of the plant.

The results obtained in the germination and emergency stages showed that as much the rate as the percentage of germination and emergency were affected by the salinity and that same that leaf area, size and production of biomass of the genotypes evaluated, decreased as concentration of NaCl increased in the culture medium. In the same way, it was found that a great genetic variability exists among genotypes to tolerate the salinity during these stages and because many species respond differentially to the saline stress agreement with the age of the plants, the genetic material was screened, selected and classified to evaluate their response to salinity in the later growth stages.

When the genotypes were evaluated under controlled conditions and in high saline concentrations in their initial growth, it was found that the variables: plant height, leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight, length of root mass, number of trifoliate leaves, and total biomass, decreased for effect of the salinity. In this stage, the genotypes classified as sensitive to the salinity showed higher concentrations of Na+ and Cl- in the aerial part, while the most tolerant showed lower concentrations..."
