In mid 2008 there were temperature neutral conditions in waters of Baja California region, followed in 2009 by an El Niño event of moderate category, and continued with a La Niña event in 2010-2011. These phenomena may modify the migratory behavior of pelagic fish that are the sport fishing target. Therefore, it was proposed to determine the changes of the pelagic species caught, their abundances and importance, and relationships with surface temperature in the fishing area of San Quintín, Baja California, México. The relative abundances and biomass and the cumulative percent by species, were calculated, and the frequencies of occurrence. To determine the order of importance of the target species, we used the Index of Community Importance (ICI) and the Index of Relative Importance (IRI). During the period June 2008 to May 2011 collected information from 184 fishing trips made by 32 different vessels, which lodged with 238 fishermen, 787 capture and pelagic fish biomass of 3522.6 kg. During the three years study, a total of 12 pelagic fish species was identified, the most abundant were the yellowtail (Seriola lalandi), the Pacific bonito (Sarda chiliensis) and the barracuda (Sphyraena argentea). The highest catches and biomass were recorded during the Neutral year (June 2008 to May 2009), followed by El Niño year (July 2009 to May 2010) that also presented the higher sea surface temperatures. In La Niña year (June 2010 to May 2011), the lower catch and biomass, and lower temperatures were recorded during the three years. The degree of association between abundance, biomass and surface temperature was low. Significant differences between the average monthly catches within the Neutral and also within El Niño years were detected, while not detected during La Niña. Differences were detected between the average annual catch during the three years. In high temperatures was recorded the highest catches, specifically at 20 °C, and during the month of october, in contrast there was a marked decline of the catches in cold temperatures.
