_______________ DEVELOPMENT OF THREE SPECIES OF TROPICAL PLANTS IN COMBINATION WITH FLOOD ON ARTIFICIAL MYCORRHIZAL INOCULATION. ABSTRACT: This study was developed to contribute to the knowledge of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (MVAF) inoculated in tropical species under inundation and no inundation conditions in a nursery, with the purpose of obtaining high quality seedlings. For this reason a two phase experiment was established at Colegio de Postgraduados, Montecillo Campus facilities; during the first phase the effect of two mycorrhizal strains were evaluated (Glomus intraradices y Zac-19) in three tropical tree species, Tabebuia donnell-smithii, Tabebuia rosea and Haematoxylum campechanium. A randomized complete block design was used. Measurements were made monthly during three months considering height, diameter, biomass, seedling quality index and percentage of mycorrhizal colonization. In the second phase the inoculated plants of; Tabebuia rosea y H. campechanium were used. The seedlings were evaluated under the two conditions (inundation and no inundation). A randomized complete experimental design was established. The variables previously mentioned were recorded at 0, 30, and 45 days after inundation. The inoculated treatments in T. rosea and H. campechianum in spite of presenting maximum mean values in most of the variables did not show a statistical significance when compared to the control. On the other hand, T. donnell-smithii at least had some variables with a statistical difference. Percentage of mycorrhizal colonization, for the three species was statistically significant; the best response was observed in treatments inoculated with G. intraradices in the three species; Zac-19 presented a higher percentage of mycorrhizal colonization only in T. donnell-smithii and H. campechianum. Analysis and comparisons during the second phase were made by conditions (inundation and no inundation) and by date. There were no comparisons between species nor between conditions even when it was the same species. Results show that T. rosea under both conditions showed no significant difference (p≤0.05) among treatments, in both dates and in any of the evaluated variables. For H. campechianum with inundation, the variables relative growth rate (TCR) in height and diameter, and absolute growth rate (TCA) in diameter did not show statistical differences between treatments in both evaluation dates. Absolute growth rate (TCA) in height for the second date (45 days) the treatments showed highly significant difference (p≤0.0072). For the no inundation condition this specie did not show significant difference in height, however for the TCR and TCA in diameter statistical differences were observed for both measurement dates. For shoot biomass (PA), root biomass (PR) and shoot:root ratio (PA/PR) , T. rosea, did notshow significant differences (p≤0.05), in any of the three evaluated variables and conditions. Also in H. campechianum there were not statistical differences for PA and PR in any of the treatments or date with and without inundation. However, for PA/PR ratio in this specie there was a significant difference (p≤ 0.0001), for the inundation condition, where T2 presented a 3.12 value. For the slenderness index (IE) and Dickson quality index (ICD), T. rosea did not show statistical difference for their respective treatments and evaluation dates. H. campechianum, only presented a significant difference in the inundation condition. There was no difference in the no inundation condition. Percentage of total mycorrhizal colonization for T. rosea and H. campechianum presented a significant difference in the evaluated conditions. T. rosea with inundation presented different behavior, since for date number 3 (D3) the percentage remained in 30% in comparison to when the water was diminishing slowly (D3), it reached a 40.8% with G. intraradices. For H. campechianum the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization varied highly. The inundation condition in date 1 (D1), T3 had the higher colonization rate (32.6%) and for date 2 (D2) T2 was the highest (35.4%), however, for D3 the highest rate was for T3 again (29.8%), even when there was an overall percentage decrease.
