_______________ MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF FECES AND ANALYSIS OF CARNIVORE FOOD HABITS IN "SIERRA DEL ABRA TANCHIPA” BIOSPHERE RESERVE, SAN LUIS POTOSI, MEXICO. ABSTRACT: Accurate identification of feces of wild carnivores is important to describe their food habits, especially those at risk or elusive species. However, morphometric identification of feces like those of sympatric carnivores is not easy. Therefore, molecular techniques are tools that provide greater accuracy in identifying stool. Analysis of food habits provides valuable information to understand the population structure of predators and prey, as well as its ecological importance to develop management and conservation strategies of carnivores and their prey. The objectives of this study were to identify the feces of carnivores extracting mitochondrial DNA and amplifying a fragment of the cytochrome b gene using a protocol based in the polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR- RFLP) and analysis content for the identification of prey consumed. With the PCR-RFLP, we identified 108 of 125 scats collected in the study area, of which, 82 were of ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), 11 of gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), 6 of puma (Puma concolor), 6 of jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi), and 3 of margay (Leopardus wiedii), respectively. In general, the most common prey mammals consumed were lower than 2 kg. The most important prey for ocelot was the rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus), and white-tailed deer for puma (Odocoileus virginianus). The standardized index of niche breadth of Levins results suggest that the ocelot was a specialist consumer, whilst the index of Pianka identified that the ocelot and the gray fox showed the higher overlap (0.78) markedly sharing their preference for rabbit. This work is the first study to identify the diet of small carnivores in RBSAT and serve as the basis for generating conservation strategies and management of these carnivores.
