_______________ ARTIFICIAL SHADE AND USE OF THIDIAZURON ON VANILLA PHYSIOLOGY AND GROWTH PROCESS (Vanilla planifolia Andrews). ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to document the effect of diverse shade levels and the use of TDZ on cuttings growth and quantity; dry vanilla distribution and production, and the impact of physiological parameters on the gas exchange. To do this, vanilla cuttings with eight leaf buds were used. The shade levels were of 30, 50 and 70%, and 0, 500 as well as 1000 mg-lt-1 of Thidiazuron was applied. Shoot length, primary shoot diameter and number of leaves were registered. Also, they were registered the apparent photosynthesis rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, CO2 intercellular concentration, total upper leaf surface, and fresh weight. Eventhough, the total shoot growth did not present statistic variation among the different treatments; the best shade intensity was the 50%. In regards of TDZ quantity, the best treatment was 0 mg-lt-1, taking in account also the swelling of the primary shoot. With 1000 mg-lt-1 of TDZ the highest number of shoots came out with a shade of 70%. The 30% of shade presented the greatest loss of water, showing as well, the lowest transpiration. The 70% of shade also registered the highest stomatal conductance. The registered values of CO2 intercellular concentration were high, so we can tell about a lower CO2 diffusion. The 30% of shade intensity showed the poorest values of gas exchange. Transpiration was notably similar among all the treatments. The best total shoot growth was found with the 50% of shade, and we can conclude that this intensity reflected the highest specific weight. The best total upper leaf surface was registered with a 70% of shade and the highest weight of dry mass was presented by the stems, the root and tendrils in 30% of shade intensity.
