_______________ DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR THE EVALUATION AND MONITORING OF FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN MEXICO. ABSTRACT: The National Forestry Commission implemented in 2004 the National Forest and Soil Inventory (INFyS) project, whose first measurement cycle was carried out from 2004 to 2007, and the second of 2009 to 2013. Despite the efforts made for field data collection in the context of INFyS, there is not a conceptual statistical framework to guide the estimation of the parameters of forest interest based on re-measured data. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to generate statistical tools for estimating forest parameters in the context of the INFyS. The report contains five chapters. Chapter I presents the general aspects of the research including the principal conclusions. It is emphasized that although the INFyS sampling cluster theoretically includes four subplots, for several reasons there is the possibility field data are taken into smaller clusters, leading to a sampling that practically implies different cluster size. It also emphasizes the lack a conceptual framework that considers statistical analysis from re-measurement data. In Chapter II the results of the statistical comparison of the estimators of Mean of Ratios (MR), Ratio of Means (RM) and Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) are presented for data of the medium rainforest of Campeche and Quintana Roo corresponding to the second measurement cycle. The results indicate that for basal area, density and volume per hectare all three estimators are equivalent. Chapter III the statistical properties the MR, RM, FIA and Van Deusen (VAN) estimators are analyzed using a simulated population of trees. Three conditions of completeness of the clusters were considered. In each of these conditions, estimates of volume and number of trees per hectare obtained by MR, RM, FIA and VAN were similar and practically unbiased. However, as the level of completeness decreases (the number of incomplete clusters increases) the estimated variance of the FIA estimator became strongly biased for both volume and density. Chapter IV the statistical properties of estimators for forest parameters are analyzed when field data are obtained through a sampling of rotating panel. Reference is made to the Replicated Sampling Estimator (RES), Generalized Least Squares (GLS) and the Univariate Composite Estimator (UCE). An artificial forest pseudo-population resulting from joining seven databases of the INFyS where re-measurements were more consistent was considered for this study. Sampling was carried out in two conditions of panelized sample size (1000 and 1500 clusters). In both conditions, the results of basal area per hectare indicate that GLS is slightly biased, but with smaller variance and that RES is unbiased, but with larger variance. The UCE produces estimates quasi-unbiased and of minimum variance.
