_______________ EFFECT OF NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT, PACKAGING AND SUBSTRATES IN THE NURSERY PRODUCTION MORPHOPHYSIOLOGICAL AND DEVELOPMENT IN FIELD Pinus greggii Engelm. var. australis. ABSTRACT: The loss rate of temperate forests places Mexico among the countries with the highest rates of deforestation. The state of Oaxaca has pioneered many activities related to sustainable forest management and community forestry. However, to improve the success of forest conservation and restoration programs, the use of high quality plant is important. In the mexican forest nurseries it is a common practice to use fertilizer formulas without knowing the nutrient requirements of each species and also, to use containers and substrates indistinctly for any plant species. Nonetheless, it is essential to understand how such practices affect seedlings produced in the nurseries, in order to develop and design optimal treatments to improve the quality of the plant. Accordingly, and based on the assumption that a system of proper nutrition improves seedling quality and promotes plant performance in field conditions, in this study the effect of two fertilization strategies were evaluated: Exponential ( FE) and conventional (FC); four types of container: Black basal drainage (NB) White basal drainage (BB), Black lateral and basal drainage (NL), and White lateral and basal drainage (BL). Also, the effects of three mixtures of different substrates were studied: Peat moss (pm), Peat moss-pine bark (pm-Cp) and pine bark (Cp), on the production of Pinus greggii seedlings in the nursery, and on field performance. The response variables evaluated in the nursery stage were: height (H), diameter at root collar (D), total fresh weight (PFT), aboveground dry weight (PSA), belowground dry weight (PSR), total dry weight (PST), aboveground biomass/belowground biomass ratio (RAR), slenderness index (IE), Dickson quality index (DCI) lignification index (IL), concentrations of nutrients (N, P, and K) and total chlorophyll content in needles. Response variables evaluated in the field were: H, D, IE, nutrient status (N, P, and K) and total chlorophyll content in needles. The analysis of variance indicated that all three factors significantly affected the morphological variables assessed in the nursery. The nutrient supply, the type of container and substrate mixture had significant effects on foliar concentrations of N, P and K. According to these results, FE produces better quality seedlings, with higher nutritional loads for reforestation of degraded sites. Containers NL or BB and substrate mixture Cp, promoted higher foliar concentrations of N and P because of concentration effect, but not K concentrations. During the field stage, the nutrient supply rate, container type, and substrate mixture, showed significant effects on foliar concentrations of N, P, and K, one year after plant establishment. The highest concentrations of N, P, and K were obtained with FE (0.180% 825.480 and 1608.174 ppm, respectively), versus FC (0.171% 804.346 and 1590.026 ppm, for N, P, and K, respectively). Regarding the type of container, NB and NL also promoted higher concentrations for N (NB = 0.183%), P (NL = 863.260 ppm) and K (NL = 1672.379 ppm). Likewise the substrate mixture Pm-Cp and Pm also reached higher concentrations of N (Pm-Cp = 0.188%), P (Pm = 860.193 ppm) and K (Pm = 1721.741 ppm). On the whole, containers NL and BB, and substrate mixtures Pm and Pm-Cp, significantly affected foliar concentrations of N, P, and K when they interacted. There were significant differences in total chlorophyll content, so that the following treatment interactions resulted in the highest values: FE*BB*Pm-Cp (BBPC-E = 2.2303 mg/L), and FE*BL*Cp (BLC-E = 2.229 mg/L). Field survival was greater than 90% at half the treatments. According to these results, we can deduce that FE produces better quality seedlings, with higher nutrient loads for reforestation of degraded sites. Containers NL or BB, and substrate mixture Pm-Cp promoted higher concentrations of N and P due to concentration effects. Even though there were no significant differences in the nursery stage in terms of total chlorophyll content, in the field stage such differences were reflected in the treatments, allowing the use of this variable as an indicator to evaluate the optimal development of Pinus greggii. var. australis in the field, but not for the production system in the nursery.
