_______________ EFFECT OF THE CANOPY OF Vachellia pennatula ON THE PHYSIOLOGY, BIOMASS PRODUCTION AND NUTRITIVE QUALITY OF Hyparrhenia rufa AND Megathyrsus maximus. ABSTRACT: The physiology, production and nutritional quality of biomass of the grasses Hyparrhenia rufa and Megathyrsus maximus under and outside the canopy of Vachellia pennatula were evaluated. The evaluations were carried out during transition to the windy season (September-October, 2015), the dry season (February-March, 2016), and the rainy season (July-August, 2016) at two sites containing H. rufa and two with M. maximus. Sampling plots (1 m2) were selected under and outside the canopies for each of 20 trees per site. Physiological and morphological variables, forage biomass and chemical-nutritional qualities of the forage were measured. The grasses only showed growth during the rainy season and transition to the windy season. Forage biomass decreased 17.5% under shade, but was statistically similar to that under full sun (1004.4 ± 580.0 versus 1222.8 ± 591.4 kg DM ha-1, respectively; p > 0.05). Crude protein was statistically different between full sun or shade (8.1 ± 1.5 versus 10.0 ± 1.7%, respectively; p < 0.05), as were the fiber fractions (NDF: 67.5 to 70.0%, ADF: 36.9 to 39.2%; p<0.05) with higher values under shade. Hyparrhenia rufa was more digestible (74.9 ± 3.2%) than M. maximus (70.8 ± 4.2%) (p < 0.0001). Grasses under full sun received more photosynthetically active radiation (1286.2 ± 784.2 μmol m-2 s-1; p < 0.0001) than under shade (395.5 ± 340.7 μmol m-2 s-1) during all seasons, and had greater (P < 0.001) CO2 assimilation rates during the rainy season (8.19 ± 6.9 μmol m-2 s-1) and thus produced more forage biomass (1283.5 ± 576.5 kg; p < 0.001) at this time than in the transition (943.6 ± 565.4 kg DM ha-1). Shade from V. pennatula did not affect M. maximus biomass production. The rainy season defines the beginnings of higher biomass for both grasses. However, transition to the windy season has a positive effect on the nutritional quality of both grasses.
