A simulation of the hydro system of Atizapan in Mexico State is being done. The objective is to quantify the demand of potable water in order to do an action plan that ensures the quality and supply of this important resource in the long term. This will be done throughout a simulation

model where the end is to strengthen the water management system.

Water management at the county can be represented as a linear system that is hard to sustain. Water is extracted from two aquifers to cover the needs of a continuously increasing population. Besides, residual water is poured openly into rivers and dams without preventive treatment. This fact constitutes a high sanitary risk for the population. The open system provokes the loss of superficial waters and harms the aquifer. In addition, the quality of this resource may be affected by the infiltration of polluting agents, considering that the groundwater of dams and rivers is as well used as a recharge zone.

Once the issues of the hydro resources in the county are identified, the answer may come under three scenarios: the first one, based in trends, the second, establishes the control policies as closing illegal wells and leakage repairs and the third one that sets prevention policies like treated water management, eco-efficient usage of the resource, water saving devices and taking advantage of pluvial resources.

The joint application of control and prevention measures may extend the availability of potable water in the Atizapan County for 40 years.
