"The present study was made from October 2010 to May 2011 to determine if 45 artificial long-days followed by natural photoperiod stimulate the endocrine and sexual activities of the local male goats in the Comarca Lagunera during the sexual rest. At the beginning of the study fifteen male goats had been used when they were 8 months old. These males remained confined in open sheds from the beginning until the end of the study. A group of males (n = 5) remained under natural day length and environmental temperature throughout the experiment. Another group of bucks (n = 5) were subjected to 75 artificial long days (16 h light/day) from November 1st, 2010 to January 15th, 2011. The other group of bucks (n = 5) were subjected to 45 artificial long days from December 1st, 2010 to January 15th. From January 16th, all treated males perceived the changes in the natural photoperiod. The plasma concentration of testosterone, the testicular circumference and the odor of the bucks were measured once a week. The sperm production was evaluated the first 4 days of April, 2011. The semen was collected once per day, using an artificial vagina in presence to a female induced artificially to estrus. The body weight was determined every 15 days. The plasma concentration of testosterone changed in the three groups during the study (P<0.0001), and existed an interaction group per time (P<0.0001). The beginning of the endocrine activity, determined by the increase in the plasma concentration of testosterone (˃5 ng/ml), was not different (P˃0.05) between the groups 45 and 75 days, and was observed in February. In addition to this, the end of the endocrine activity determined by the decrease in the plasma concentration of testosterone (<5 ng/ml) was observed in April, but it happened firstly in the 45 days group than in 75 days group (P<0.05). In the control group, the plasma concentration of testosterone increased in May, when the natural breeding season begins. In this group, the endocrine activity started later than in 45 and 75 days groups. The testicular circumference changed during the study in the three groups (P<0.0001), but in March, the testicular circumference was higher in the 45 and 75 days groups than in control group (P<0.05). Difference did not exist between the two last groups (P˃0.05). The odor was higher in the 45 and 75 days groups than in the control group from March to May (P<0.01). No difference existed between these last two groups (P˃0.05). Ejaculation latency and the percentage of bucks refusing to ejaculate were higher in the bucks of control group than in the bucks of 45 and 75 days groups (P<0.0001). No difference existed between these last two groups (P˃0.05). The ejaculate volume, spermatic concentration of ejaculate and the total number of spermatozoa per ejaculate were higher in the bucks of 45 and 75 days groups than in the control group (P<0.0001). No difference existed between these last two groups in the mentioned variables (P˃0.05). The body weight changed during the study in the three groups (P<0.0001), and existed an interaction group per time (P<0.0001), but in February, the body weight was higher in the 45 days group compared with the control group (P<0.05). These results demonstrate that a photoperiod treatment of 45 artificial long-days from December 1st, stimulate the endocrine and sexual activities of local male goats in the Comarca Lagunera during the natural non-breeding season"
