"There are several mating designs to study the breeding potential of a population which permit to estimate the effects and genetic variances. This makes possible the assessment of the heritability and response to selection. Genetic design I from North Carolina has been used in maize. The objectives of this research were: To estimate the proportion of additive and dominance genetic variance and heritability in strict sense; to a population of yellow corn, of broad genetic basis. To suggest an effective breeding procedure this allows improving the quantitatively inherited traits. Genetic material consisting of 300 full-sib families was developed with Design I North Carolina and evaluated in Úrsulo Galvan, Veracrúz, using an incomplete block design, Alfa latice (0.1), with two replications. The effects and genetic variances, were computed by using the VARCOMP procedure (METHOD=TYPE1), of the SAS program (SAS Institute, 1999). These components were used to estimate additive genetic variance (), dominance variance (), heritability and standard error, as shown by Hallauer and Miranda (1981). Results indicated that the population showed a similar genetic structure with very few differences between and within traits. The analysis of variance, the classification variables for males, the variables that showed significant differences with () were: . The great proportion of genetic variance was attributed to additive effects, in plant height the = 44.68, and grain yield was = 0.13. The estimates of dominance variance were negative or similar to cero. The values of heritability (h2) were downward, yield was h2 = 17 %. In the estimation of components of variance under Design I, the material derived from a population of ample genetic variability can be selected and crossed in dent form by flint, which allows to find good heterotic behavior, and to choose a scheme of Inter-population improvement, having an advance in the improvement"
