"The objective of this study was to determine if a feed supplementation improves the sexual response to 2.5 months of long days in male goats raised under extensive conditions. Two groups of bucks (n=5 each) were integrated in two flocks of female goats grazed under extensive system, fed on native vegetation. At night, bucks were kept in pens separated from females and they received 2.5 months of artificial long days (16 h light: 8 h darkness) starting on November 1. The supplemented group received daily for each buck, 1 kg of alfalfa hay and 300 g of commercial concentrate. In both groups, male’s body weight had variations throughout time of study (P<0.001). ANOVA reveals a treatment * time interaction, and the comparison two a two showed that the 4 supplemented group was superior than the control group in the last fifteen days of the study. The male’s body condition in the two groups exhibit variations through the time of the study (P<0.001). Also, ANOVA reveals a significant interaction between treatment and time of study (P<0.05), these differences were observed on November 22, January 24, February 29 and March 31. The testicular weight increased significantly throughout the time of study in both groups (P<0.001; control: from 76 ± 7 g to 124 ± 4 g; supplemented: from 70 ± 6 g to 116 ± 9 g). However, an effect of the treatment and treatment * time interaction was not different in this variable (P>0.05). The odor intensity was similar in both groups, increasing in March from 0.2 ± 0.2 to 1.4 ± 0.2 and 1.8 ± 0.2 for control and supplemented group, respectively (P>0.05). Mean diameter of seminiferous tubules was similar (204.00 ± 10.4 μm) in the supplemented group and the control group (183.75 ± 8.5 μm; P>0.05). The present result concluded that feed supplementation did not improve the sexual response of bucks treated with 2.5 months of long days and grazed under extensive conditions."
