_______________ SOCIAL CAPITAL IN AFRO-DESCENDANT COMMUNITIES FOR RURAL TOURISM. ABSTRACT: The term social capital refers to those intangible forms of an individual, but that do not work in the same individual way but in a group or among the community, that is, cooperation, trust, norms, social cohesion and networks, becoming then, in tangible ways capable of generating and taking advantage of other forms of capital, such as physical, economic and human. In the present work a qualitative investigation was carried out by means of a non-probabilistic discretionary sampling of 31 people. The first part consisted of a survey to identify social capital in the communities of El Mirador in the municipality of Yanga, and Mata Clara in the municipality of Cuitláhuac, where it was identified that there are limiting elements of social capital, such as trust to the government, insecurity and identity, however, there is availability for the generation of groups and groups with the potential to carry out tourist activities. In the second part, in-depth interviews were conducted in an ethnographic study to, in addition to contributing to recognize social capital, build a heritage discourse. There is an appropriation of assets, privatization of estates, ignorance of its own history, community fragmentation and lack of background identity, linked to assets, are the main sources that limit the construction of tourism projects. A methodology based on social capital is proposed for the development of tourism projects and finally the experiences for strengthening social capital in the Ecuadorian case are presented.

Maize seed marketing chains and marketing efficiency along supply chains of the hills in Nepal

Christian Böber (2015)

Remoteness, poor infrastructures, labor shortages, small quantities of seed at the producer level and few private seed traders are inherent problems in maize seed production and marketing in the hills of nepal. Farm-saved seed, including seed exchange and private sector supply are the main sources of improved maize seeds in nepal. Using the primary data collected from 200 respondents across 20 hilly districts of nepal, this paper analyzes marketing chains and the efficiency of marketing of improved maize seed along the supply chains. The results show five major maize seed marketing chains. Chain i involved producers, collectors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers; chain ii involved producers, collectors, wholesalers and consumers; chain iii involved producers, collectors, retailers and consumers; chain iv involved producers, collectors and consumers; and chain v involved producers and consumers. A total of 64.3 tons of improved maize seed was marketed through the identified chains. Chain ii was the most important supply chain, accounting for 38.8per cent of total marketed seeds; while chain i was the least important, accounting for 4.3per cent. Producers’ share on consumer price was highest in chain v (100per cent) and lowest in chain iii (66per cent). Transportation cost accounted for the highest amount (average 47.5per cent). Highest margin of profit (nrs 6.5/kg) was taken by retailers and lowest by collectors (nrs 2.5/kg). Highest marketing efficiency with a magnitude of 7.24 was observed in chain v and lowest with a magnitude of 0.9 in chain i.

_______________ THE TLACOYO AS FOOD RESOURCE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LOCAL TOURIST SUPPLY: CASES TEXCOCO AND CHICONCUAC, STATE OF MÉXICO. ABSTRACT: Rural tourism arises as a result of a revaluation of rural spaces, offers direct contact with nature and interaction with the local population, also allows to obtain alternative sources of income to agriculture. The main actors in rural tourism are families who have had to face the critical situation of the labor market in these areas and diversify their activities in non-agricultural occupations for subsistence reasons in order to complement family income. One of the activities offered by rural tourism is gastronomy, whose motivation for tourists is a new experience to get to know the local culture, identity, eat indigenous foods and everything that is different from what they are accustomed to consume daily. The research work presented below is divided into two chapters, in the first chapter the study of tlacoyo as a food resource and its relationship with the local tourism offer is presented: Texcoco and Chiconcuac cases, State of Mexico, whose objective was to evaluate the Tlacoyo as a food resource and the role it plays as a traditional food in the consolidation of the local tourism supply, its contribution to the well-being of families and the work of women. The second chapter presents an integration study that allowed the study of Tlacoyo to be related to a strategic unit of Community Rural Tourism, taking as an example the Model of Community Rural Tourism of Peru and the management of Rural Capital assets, with the experience that was obtained visit nine communities in the regions of Cusco, Puno and Arequipa during the Linking Stay in Peru, in October 2018. Rural tourism requires the contribution of research such as the study of tlacoyo where data was generated that did not exist and will be useful for future research.

Community based participatory research the Escuela de Salud Pública in Mexico

MARIA DE LA LUZ ARENAS MONREAL MARLENE CORTEZ LUGO IRENE MARGARITA PARADA TORO (2011)

For a number of decades, some community studies

interventions have been designed according to

parameters, criteria, perspectives, without taking

into consideration the population.1

Recent studies in

communities in the United States, Canada, Australia

have shown the great value of participatory research,

where the researchers, community authorities, and

population are equally involved, thus improving public

health research community interventions.2–5 These

programs, which include community training, are of

significant importance for students wishing to learn

more about a range of environmental, social, economic

factors that affect health in all societies.6,7

Medical schools worldwide are including programs

whereby students conduct practical work outside the

classroom teaching hospitals (e.g., rural placement

programs in Tasmania the West Virginia

Rural Health Education Partnerships). Community

medical education offers students the opportunity to

Farmers, food and climate change: ensuring community-based adaptation is mainstreamed into agricultural programmes

Sonja Vermeulen Edidah Ampaire (2014)

Climate change creates widespread risks for food production. As climate impacts are often locally specific, it is imperative that large-scale initiatives to support smallholder farmers consider local priorities and integrate lessons from successful autonomous adaptation efforts. This article explores how large-scale programmes for smallholder adaptation to climate change might link effectively with community-led adaptation initiatives. Drawing on experiences in bangladesh, mozambique, uganda and india, this article identifies key success factors and barriers for considering local priorities, capacities and lessons in large-scale adaptation programmes. It highlights the key roles of extension services and farmers' organizations as mechanisms for linking between national-level and community-level adaptation, and a range of other success factors which include participative and locally driven vulnerability assessments, tailoring of adaptation technologies to local contexts, mapping local institutions and working in partnership across institutions. Barriers include weak governance, gaps in the regulatory and policy environment, high opportunity costs, low literacy and underdeveloped markets. The article concludes that mainstreaming climate adaptation into large-scale agricultural initiatives requires not only integration of lessons from community-based adaptation, but also the building of inclusive governance to ensure smallholders can engage with those policies and processes affecting their vulnerability.

IMPACT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A PROTECTED AREA ON THE WELL-BEING OF A RURAL COMMUNITY IN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

Elizabeth Olmos Martínez Gonzalo Rodríguez-Rodríguez SILVIA SALAS MARQUEZ Alfredo Ortega-Rubio (2018)

"The discussion about the biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing is currently intense and, quite often, revenue coming from tourism had been assumed enough to marry together the development of local communities with the protection of natural capital. However, the debate is far from been solved. This research is based in three key features aimed to capture the complexity of the phenomena: data is taken in three different periods, focus is on relationship between biodiversity protection and poverty alleviation and, finally a context sensitive approach was adopted. Results shows that i) improvement in wellbeing has not to do with endogenous development, ii) the impact of the park in poverty alleviation is negligible and iii) tourism is not a solution per se."

Resumen en inglés: "Members of the Sustainable Ecotourism Centre El Madresal (SECM), in Chiapas, Mexico, had the initiative to implement the avitourism to obtain social and economic benefits, but at the same time contribute to the conservation of a wetland coastal zone, which is habitat of high avian species diversity.
