Intimate partner violence and its relationship to labor income

Yei Javier Zepeda Hernández Alma Sofia Santillan (2024, [Artículo, Artículo])

In Mexico, 70.1% of women have been victims of violence in their lifetime and the main perpetrator is her intimate partner. Gender violence is a public health problem that has multiple negative impacts in woman and their offsprings. The relation violence and income is an issue that has been scarcely studied for Mexico. The objective of this article is to analyze the intimate partner violence and its relationship to labor income for Mexican women, data used are from the National Survey on the Dynamics of Households Relationships (ENDIREH 2021). The principal component method is used to estimate five kinds of violence; physical, emotional, economic, sexual and, harassment. The instrumental variables method is used to consider the endogeneity of income and violence variables. Except harassment, the results indicate a negative relationship between income and violence. Specifically, sexual violence has the greatest negative effects; women who are victims of sexual violence have an average reduction of 17.4% in monthly labor income. This negative effect represents a loss of just over two month of working days per year and, in the aggregate terms, is equivalent to 0.87% of GDP. The above highlights the importance of orienting public policy actions to work in prevention, attention, punishment and eradications any kind of violence against women.

Use of organic substrates on the quality of watermelon seedlings

Benigno Rivera Hernández Victor Hugo Quej Chi Roberto Gutiérrez Burón José Luis Andrade Torres EUGENIO CARRILLO Vianey González CLAUDINA VILLARREAL (2022, [Artículo])

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a succulent fruit and vine-like plant that is cultivated in Mexico and it generates employment and currency for the country. However, there is the need to research what local organic substrates can substitute peat moss as a culture medium to produce watermelon seedlings of good quality and at low cost. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of five local organic substrates as substitutes of the commercial substrate “Peat Moss”, for the production of seedlings of two watermelon cultivars, Sun Sweet and Jubilee. Five local organic substrates were studied: cacao husk, compost, vermicompost, bovine manure, coconut fiber and the commercial substrate “Peat Moss” as control. The response variables were percentage of germination, indicators of morphological quality and morphological quality indexes, stability of the clod, and relative efficiency of the local substrates. The best morphological indicators and morphological quality index of the seedlings were found with the substrates cacao husk and vermicompost, with a seedling quality similar to those obtained with the commercial substrate. Compost presented the lowest stability of the clod and relative efficiency. The substrates of cacao husk and vermicompost can substitute the commercial substrate “Peat Moss”, in addition to being easy to obtain and of low cost; so they are a viable alternative for rural farmers in the production of watermelon seedlings. © 2022, Sociedade de Olericultura do Brasil. Los médicos costarricenses formados en México durante el cardenismo: retorno e inserción laboral (1934-1961)

Costa Rican doctors trained in Mexico during the Cardenismo: return and labor insertion (1934-1961)

The present work analyzes the return of Costa Rican students who traveled to Mexico during the cardenismo period to study medicine, in order to determine their labor insertion in the Costa Rican health system between the 1940s and 1960s. The circumstances surrounding the return and work insertion of these professionals are explored. In this regard, it is evident that the integration to the workforce of the San Juan de Dios Hospital allowed a rapid ascent in the medical ladder. This dynamic made it possible for a considerable number of the doctors treated in this study to hold positions of power in Costa Rican health institutions, a situation that led to their integration into the process of creating the University of Costa Rica’s School of Medicine, which became operational in 1961.

The search for cryptic L-Rhamnosyltransferases on the Sporothrix schenckii genome

Hector M. Mora-Montes Karina García-Gutiérrez Laura Cristina García Carnero Nancy Lozoya-Perez Jorge Humberto Ramírez Prado (2022, [Artículo])

The fungal cell wall is an attractive structure to look for new antifungal drug targets and for understanding the host-fungus interaction. Sporothrix schenckii is one of the main causative agents of both human and animal sporotrichosis and currently is the species most studied of the Sporothrix genus. The cell wall of this organism has been previously analyzed, and rhamnoconjugates are signature molecules found on the surface of both mycelia and yeast-like cells. Similar to other reactions where sugars are covalently linked to other sugars, lipids, or proteins, the rhamnosylation process in this organism is expected to involve glycosyltransferases with the ability to transfer rhamnose from a sugar donor to the acceptor molecule, i.e., rhamnosyltransferases. However, no obvious rhamnosyltransferase has thus far been identified within the S. schenckii proteome or genome. Here, using a Hidden Markov Model profile strategy, we found within the S. schenckii genome five putative genes encoding for rhamnosyltransferases. Expression analyses indicated that only two of them, named RHT1 and RHT2, were significantly expressed in yeast-like cells and during interaction with the host. These two genes were heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, and the purified recombinant proteins showed rhamnosyltransferase activity, dependent on the presence of UDP-rhamnose as a sugar donor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about rhamnosyltransferases in S. schenckii. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

REDISCOVERY OF FUIRENA REPENS (CYPERACEAE), A RARE ENDEMIC OF THE MEXICAN HIGH PLATEAU

David J. Rosen Christopher S. Reid MARIA DEL SOCORRO GONZALEZ ELIZONDO Robert Kral (2008, [Artículo])
