Autotrophic denitrification of nitrate rich wastewater in fluidized bed reactors using pyrite and elemental sulfur as electron donors

Maria Federica Carboni Simon Mills SONIA LORENA ARRIAGA GARCIA Gavin Collins Umer Zeeshan Ijaz Piet Nicolaas Luc Lens (2022, [Artículo])

"This study compared denitrification performances and microbial communities in fluidized bed reactors (FBRs) carrying out autotrophic denitrification using elemental sulfur (S0) and pyrite (FeS2) as electron donors. The reactors were operated for 220 days with nitrate loading rates varying between 23 and 200 mg N-NO-3 /Lmiddotd and HRT between 48 and 4 h. The highest denitrification rates achieved were 142.2 and 184.4 mg NNO-3 /Lmiddotd in pyrite and sulfur FBRs, respectively. Pyrite-driven denitrification produced less SO2- 4 and no buffer addition was needed to regulate the pH. The sulfur FBR needed instead CaCO3 to maintain the pH neutral and consequentially more sludge was produced (CaSO4 precipitation). The active community of pyrite-based systems was investigated and Azospira sp., Ferruginibacter sp., Rhodococcus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were the predominant genera, while Thiobacillus sp. and Sulfurovum sp. dominated the active community in the sulfur FBR. However, Thiobacillus sp. became more dominant when operating at elevated nitrogen loading rate. Patterns of diversity and microbial community assembly were assessed and revealed three distinct stages of microbial community succession which corresponded with the operation of a period of high influent nitrate concentration (135 mg N-NO-3 /L). It is proposed that a high degree of functional redundancy in the initial microbial communities may have helped both reactors to respond better to such high influent nitrate concentration."

Voter´´´'s dilemma between honest and competent candidates in the 2018 elections in Mexico and Brazil

José Daniel Sousa Oliva (2023, [Artículo, Artículo])

This article is dedicated to understanding and explaining the electoral dilemma “Dishonest, but competent” and “Honest, but incompetent” in the elections of legislators, governors and municipal presidents in 2018 in Mexico and Brazil. The research questions that guided the investigation are: Why are there voters in Mexico and Brazil who vote for “dishonest” candidates? And how do the voters of those countries decide their vote in the face of this dilemma? The theoretical approach of this work is Social Psychology through two analytical tools: the Funnel of Causality and the Tripartite Model of Attitudes. The methodology is mixed, quantitative and qualitative, using statistical models with data from the international surveys World Values Survey and Comparative Studies of Electoral Systems, as well as the application of Focus Groups in the distance modality. In this way, four categories of voter are proposed: moralist, moralist-moderate, pragmatic-moderate and pragmatic. The arguments of this work are: first, that regardless of cultural differences, there is an “affective voter” “non-rational” who makes decisions based on emotions and intuition, demonstrating that the affective components of attitudes are more relevant than the cognitive ones in electoral choice; second, that voting for “dishonest” candidates is determined under a greater influence of “short-term factors” such as candidate characteristics and short-term events rather than “long-term factors” such as party loyalties and ideology.

Potential impacts of Ukraine-Russia armed conflict on global wheat food security: A quantitative exploration

Khondoker Mottaleb Gideon Kruseman Sieglinde Snapp (2022, [Artículo])

Violent conflict is a major cause of acute food crises. In 2021, at least 155 million people in 10 countries were severely food insecure and eight of those countries were experiencing armed conflict. On February 24, 2022, an armed conflict between Russian Federation (Russia) and Ukraine escalated. As Russia and Ukraine are major wheat exporters, this will aggravate the already precarious food security situation in many developing countries by disrupting wheat production and export and by accelerating price hikes in import-dependent developing countries. This study examines the potential impacts of this ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine on wheat price, consumption, and calorie intake from wheat. In doing so, it applies the conditional mixed process estimation procedure using information collected from 163 countries and territories for the years 2016–2019 from online database of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The study shows that, on average, a 1% decrease in the global wheat trade could increase the producers' price of wheat by 1.1%, and a 1% increase in the producers' price could reduce the yearly per capita wheat consumption by 0.59%, daily calorie intake by 0.54% and protein intake by 0.64% in the sampled countries. Based on this, the study demonstrates that a 50% reduction in wheat exports by Russia and Ukraine could increase the producers’ price of wheat by 15%, which would induce a reduction in wheat consumption and dietary energy intake by at least 8%. Since wheat export has reduced from both Russia and Ukraine, to avoid a food crisis in developing countries, policies are suggested, including near term improvement of domestic wheat production by promoting improved agronomic practices to close yield gaps to meet a substantial portion of wheat self-sufficiency goals. In the long run, countries in Africa, East Asia and South America can explore expanding wheat into new land area. International donor agencies can play a key role in supporting the ongoing wheat research and development activities.

Distribución de la variación genética de insectos asociados a Hesperoyucca whipplei en la península de Baja California

Distribution of genetic variation of insects associated with Hesperoyucca whipplei in the Baja California peninsula

The type of obligate ecological interaction between host plants and their associated insects has been showing to have an impact on the genetic diversity of the species involved. The chaparral yuca (Hesperoyucca whipplei) presents a relationship of obligate mutualism with the pollinating moth Tegeticula maculata, and obligate commensalism with the moth Prodoxus marginatus. Both insects deposit their eggs in flower structures and feed on the developing fruit. To determine the effect of ecological interactions on insects’ genetic diversity, this study evaluated the level of variation and genetic structure of both moths throughout the Baja California peninsula. The mitochondrial COI gene was amplified in 86 individuals of T. maculata and 120 individuals of P. marginatus. Haplotypic diversity was lower in T. maculata (Hd = 0.601) compared to P. marginatus (Hd = 0.966) while nucleotide diversity was low in both species (pi = .0018 and 0.007 respectively). Haplotype networks, AMOVA, mismatch test and Tajima’s D values in T. maculata indicate a pattern of population expansion, whereas in P. marginatus they indicate demographic stability. These findings support that obligate mutualism between H. whipplei and T. maculata, in contrast, to obligate commensalism with P. marginatus, has a direct impact on the level of genetic diversity of the moths, rather than on their structure across the distribution.
