FPGA-Based Educational Platform for Real-Time Image Processing Experiments

In this paper, an implementation of an educational platform for real-time linear and morphological image filtering using a FPGA NexysII, Xilinx®, Spartan 3E, is described. The system is connected to a USB port of a personal computer, which in that way form a powerful and low-cost design station for educational purposes. The FPGA-based system is accessed through a MATLAB graphical user interface, which handles the communication setup and data transfer. The system allows the students to perform comparisons between results obtained from MATLAB simulations and FPGA-based real-time processing. High payload data-hiding in audio signals based on a modified OFDM approach

This paper presents a high payload data-hiding scheme for audio signals following the OFDM concept. It is based on changing the phase component of the audio signal via a reduced-arc M-order Phase Shift Key- ing (MPSK) modulator on selected frequency samples of the audio signal. This approach allows the data- hiding payload and perceptual distortion to be controlled by the number of altered frequency compo- nents of the audio signal and the severity of this alteration. The data-hiding payload can be estimated a priori independently of the audio signal features. In addition, due to the relation of the proposed scheme with the traditional use of MPSK modulation, the BER of the encoded data is analytically derived, there- fore, it is known in advance. This allows the transmission of reliable hidden data, in contrast to previous works. Results obtained with representative test cases show that the proposed algorithm provides an increase of one order of magnitude in data payload compared with state-of-the-art works.

Aunque para el ciudadano común el término “óxido” usualmente tan sólo trae a la memoria la herrumbre que aparece en muchos objetos metálicos, en realidad abarca una gran variedad desustancias, algunas de las cuales parecería improbable que pertenecieran a esta categoría, por ejemplo, el agua. Los óxidos son tan variados y tan cotidianos que, ellos o algunas especies químicas derivadas, constituyen la gran mayoría de nuestro mundo mineral y en algunos casos, incluso, son fundamentales para la vida. Un aspecto particularmente interesante de los óxidos es que los hay de dos tipos principales: ácidos y alcalinos; a su vez estos dos tipos de óxidos son antagonistas químicos de tal modo que mutuamente se neutralizan produciendo sustancias muy estables llamadas sales. Estas reacciones de neutralización son también fundamentales tanto para el mundo natural como para nuestro modo de vida moderno.

When common people listen the word “oxide” usually they only think of the rust that forms on the surface of some metallic objects, but the term, however, embraces a wide variety of substances.

Water, for instance, is a true oxide. Oxides are so many and common that it is hard to believe that these, or some of their derivatives, compose most of the mineral world and in some cases

they are vital for life. It is interesting to note that there are two main classes of oxides: acidic and alkaline. These types of oxides are chemical antagonists in such a way that neutralize each other producing salts, some kind of very stable substances. Neutralizing reactions are very important for both the natural world and people’s every-day life.

Onychomycosis is a disease with a therapeutic challenge determined by the nailsubstratum anatomical characteristics, and due to disease chronicity. In Mexico, dermatomycoses are among the 20 main causes for visiting a Physician. Ageratina pichinchensis, popularly known as “axihuitl”, has been used in Mexican Traditional Medicine for the treatment of superficial mycosis. With this purpose, fresh or dried aerial parts of this plant are extracted with alcohol, and the product is administered topically onto the damaged skin. From a low polarity extract, an antifungal compound was isolated and chemicaly identified as encecalin. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness and tolerability of two phytopharmaceutical products prepared with standardized extract (encecalin containing) of A. pichinchensis on patients with mild and moderate onychomycosis, and the comparison of both extract concentrations (12.6 and 16.8%). A double blind clinical trial was carried out for evaluating the effectiveness and tolerability of A. pichinchensis (12.6 and 16.8%) in lacquer solution for topical administration for six months. A positive control treatment was included using a similar presentation but, in this case, containing 8% ciclopirox. A total of 181 patients were included, 62 (34.3%) were treated with the phytopharmaceutical containing 12.6% extract, 60 (33.1%) received treatment with 16.8%, while 59 (32.5%) received the 8% ciclopirox. At the end of the treatment period, the therapeutic effectiveness exhibited by the lower concentration (12.6%) of A. pichinchensis extract was 67.2%, patients treated with the higher concentration (16.8%) showed an effectiveness of 79.2%, while patients of the control group reached 80%. Regarding clinical evolution, analysis of results evidenced that the 16.8% extract possesses higher therapeutic effectiveness with a significant statistical difference (p = 0.010). Any treatment produced adverse effects. It is possible to conclude that both concentrations of phytopaharmaceuticals possess effectiveness on patients with mild and moderate onychomycosis. The effect was similar to that produced by 8% ciclopirox. The formulation with the higher extract concentration (16.8%) possesses higher rates of effectiveness, but maintaining 100% tolerability.

La onicomicosis es una enfermedad de las uñas que, debido a las características histológicas del tejido y a la cronicidad del padecimiento, representa un reto terapéutico. En México, las dermatomicosis se encuentran dentro de las 20 primeras causas de consulta. La especie Ageratina pichinchensis, conocida popularmente como “axihuitl”, ha sido utilizada en la medicina tradicional mexicana como antifúngico. Los terapeutas tradicionales utilizan las partes aéreas de la planta, las cuáles se maceran en alcohol etílico durante dos o tres días y se aplica con un algodón sobre las lesiones. De un extracto orgánico de baja a mediana polaridad se aisló un compuesto químico que mostró una importante actividad antimicótica que fue identificado como encecalina. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar la efectividad y tolerabilidad terapéutica de un fitomedicamento elaborado con el extracto estandarizado (en la concentración de encecalina) de A. pichinchensis en pacientes con onicomicosis leve y moderada utilizando dos diferentes concentraciones de extracto (12.6 y 16.8%). Se realizó un estudio clínico, doble ciego, aleatorizado y controlado, que evaluó la efectividad y tolerabilidad terapéutica de los dos fitomedicamentos en una base de laca para ser administrados localmente durante seis meses. Se incluyó un control positivo que consistió en un medicamento con una presentación idéntica pero que contenía ciclopirox al 8%. Se incluyeron un total de 181 pacientes, de los cuáles, 62 (34.3%) fueron tratados con el fitomedicamento de A. pichinchensis con la concentración al 12.6%, 60 (33.1%) recibieron tratamiento con el fitomedicamento al 16.8%, mientras que 59 pacientes (32.5%) recibieron el medicamento que contenía ciclopirox al 8%. Una vez concluido el tiempo de administración de los tratamientos, la efectividad fue de un 67.2% en los pacientes que se aplicaron el fitomedicamento a la concentración más baja (12.6%) y de 79.2% en los que se administraron la concentración más alta (16.8%) y de un 80% en los pacientes que se aplicaron el tratamiento control. Con relación a la evolución clínica, el análisis de resultados evidenció que la concentración al 16.8% presentó una mayor efectividad terapéutica con una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p = 0.010). Ninguno de los tratamientos presentó efectos adversos. De acuerdo al análisis de resultados se puede concluir que ambas concentraciones del fitomedicamento son eficaces en el tratamiento de la onicomicosis leve y moderada y que el efecto fue similar al producido por el ciclopirox al 8%. Además, en ningún caso se detectaron efectos adversos y fue posible establecer que la concentración más alta del extracto (16.8%) presenta una mayor efectividad conservando la tolerabilidad.

We analyzed the effects of the expression of HPV 16 E6 oncoprotein variants (AA-a, AA-c, E-A176/G350, E-C188/G350, E-G350), and the E-Prototype in global gene expression profiles in an in vitro model. Genealogical records of animals (studbook) are created to avoid reproduction between closely related individuals, which could cause inbreeding, particularly for such endangered species as the Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758). Jaguar is the largest felid in the Americas and is considered an important ecological key species. In Mexico, wild jaguar populations have been significantly reduced in recent decades, and population decline typically accompany decreases in genetic variation. There is no current census of captive jaguars in Mexico, and zoos do not follow a standardized protocol in breeding programs based on genetic studies. Here, we emphasise the importance of maintaining an adequate level of genetic variation and propose the implementation of standardised studbooks for jaguars in Mexico, mainly to avoid inbreeding. In addition, achieving the aims of studbook registration would provide a population genetic characterisation that could serve as a basis for ex situ conservation programmes.

Effect of the agglomerate geometry on the effective electrical conductivity of a porous electrode

The study of the microstructure of random heterogeneous materials, related to an electrochemical device, is relevant because their effective macroscopic properties, e.g., electrical or proton conductivity, are a function of their effective transport coefficients (ETC). The magnitude of ETC depends on the distribution and properties of the material phase. In this work, an algorithm is developed to generate stochastic two-phase (binary) image configurations with multiple geometries and polydispersed particle sizes. The recognizable geometry in the images is represented by the white phase dispersed and characterized by statistical descriptors (two-point and line-path correlation functions). Percolation is obtained for the geometries by identifying an infinite cluster to guarantee the connection between the edges of the microstructures. Finally, the finite volume method is used to determine the ETC. Agglomerate phase results show that the geometry with the highest local current distribution is the triangular geometry. In the matrix phase, the most significant results are obtained by circular geometry, while the lowest is obtained by the 3-sided polygon. The proposed methodology allows to establish criteria based on percolation and surface fraction to assure effective electrical conduction according to their geometric distribution; results provide an insight for the microstructure development with high projection to be used to improve the electrode of a Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA).

En este trabajo se analizan los instrumentos y técnicas utilizados en la docencia e investigación farmacéutica desarrollada en México en el siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX, a través de una investigación historiográfica. Los instrumentos y técnicas utilizados en la investigación de las plantas medicinales se centran a la realización de análisis químicos mediante los procedimientos de las escuelas de farmacia europeas y procuran la búsqueda de alcaloides de interés terapéutico. Esto evidencia el papel de los farmacéuticos en el desarrollo de la enseñanza y la práctica de la ciencia química, que abrió paso a la fundación de la carrera de químico-farmacéutico-biólogo.
