Effects of geostrophic kinetic energy on the distribution of mesopelagic fish larvae in the southern Gulf of California in summer/fall stratified seasons

Effects of geostrophic kinetic energy flux on the three-dimensional distribution of fish larvae of mesopelagic species (Vinciguerria lucetia, Diogenichthys laternatus, Benthosema panamense and Triphoturus mexicanus) in the southern Gulf of California during summer and fall seasons of stronger stratification were analyzed. The greatest larval abundance was found at sampling stations in geostrophic kinetic energy-poor areas (<7.5 J/m3), where the distribution of the dominant species tended to be stratified. Larvae of V. lucetia (average abundance of 318 larvae/10m2) and B. panamense (174 larvae/10m2) were mostly located in and above the pycnocline (typically ∼ 40 m depth). In contrast, larvae of D. laternatus (60 larvae/10m2) were mainly located in and below the pycnocline. On the other hand, in sampling stations from geostrophic kinetic energy-rich areas (> 21 J/m3), where mesoscale eddies were present, the larvae of the dominant species had low abundance and were spread more evenly through the water column, in spite of the water column stratification. For example, in a cyclonic eddy, V. lucetia larvae (34 larvae/10m2) extended their distribution to, at least, the limit of sampling 200 m depth below the pycnocline, while D. laternatus larvae (29 larvae/10m2) were found right up to the surface, both probably as a consequence mixing and secondary circulation in the eddy. Results showed that the level of the geostrophic kinetic energy flux affects the abundance and the three-dimensional distribution of mesopelagic fish larvae during the seasons of stronger stratification, indicating that areas with low geostrophic kinetic energy may be advantageous for feeding and development of mesopelagic fish larvae because of greater water column stability. © 2016 Contreras-Catala et al. Este trabajo analiza el impacto en el espacio universitario de las políticas de género implementadas en el ámbito de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA, Argentina) entre los años 2015 y 2020. Se trata de un estudio de caso realizado en el ámbito de la Ciudad Universitaria, campus en el que se emplazan las facultades de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (FCEyN) y de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo (FADU). El propósito de este artículo es problematizar la relación entre afecto y espacialidad a partir de los resultados de una encuesta que se propuso identificar cuáles son las emociones que suscitan algunos espacios cotidianos para quienes trabajan y estudian en el campus de la UBA, en particular, aquellos intervenidos con políticas de género durante los últimos años.

This paper analyzes the impact on spaciality of gender policies implemented at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA, Argentina) between 2015 and 2020. It is a case study carried out in the campus where the Faculties of Exact and Natural Sciences (FCEyN) and Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU) are located. The purpose of this article is to problematize the relationship between affective perception and spatiality based on the results of a survey that aimed to identify the emotions that some daily spaces arouse for those who work and study on the UBA Campus, in particular, those intervened with gender policies in recent years.

La laguna El Limón, en el municipio de Reforma, Chiapas, México, ha presentado mortandad masiva de peces, lo que llevó a realizar un estudio más profundo que determinara el grado de contaminación de la laguna, así como las causas posibles de los eventos. Los resultados muestran que en los sedimentos de la laguna las concentraciones promedio de Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd y Cu rebasan los límites recomendados en Canadá y Estados Unidos para evitar la aparición de efectos biológicos nocivos en especies acuáticas. Es de especial mención la acumulación de Zn, que presenta una concentración máxima de 1360 mg/kg, presumiblemente asociada al uso de este metal como catalizador en una planta procesadora de gas. Si bien las descargas industriales que vierten a la laguna cumplen con los estándares establecidos en México para metales, esto no ha sido suficiente para evitar su acumulación en los sedimentos, lo cual demuestra que las normas existentes para las descargas de aguas residual industrial deben aumentar sus restricciones y tomar en cuenta el tipo de cuerpo receptor al que vierten. En el caso del uso de agua residual o contaminada para riego, la acumulación puede darse en los suelos agrícolas, pasando eventualmente a los cultivos, lo que tampoco es deseable.

La cuarentena sanitaria de los últimos dos años (COVID-19) obligó a “rediseñar”, “digitalizar” o “virtualizar” nuestros cursos y estilos de enseñanza en tiempo récord para “adaptarlas” al “formato virtual a distancia” (online). La profusión de comillas en las líneas anteriores tiene la intención de señalar el carácter incierto o erróneo que ciertos términos-fetiche adquirieron en el proceso. Es importante desmitificar esas figuras de la expresión que se elevaron casi al nivel de pseudo-epistemes (presuntamente novedosas) para la enseñanza del Diseño. Ese tema lo abordo con mayor amplitud en una nueva investigación, recientemente registrada en la UAM. En este texto esbozo (en forma algo lúdica) pero seria y breve a la vez, la conveniencia de tal desmitificación y avanzo en el delineamiento de un modelo de la alternancia y convergencia de recursos pedagógico-didácticos síncronos y asíncronos, mediante la tecnología-red digital, como un elemento estratégico para la educación futura en Diseño.

The profusion of quotation marks in the previous lines is intended to indicate the uncertain or erroneous character that certain fetish-terms acquired in the process. It is important to demystify those figures of expression that have risen almost to the level of pseudo-epistemes (presumably novel) for teaching design. I address this topic more fully in a new investigation, recently registered at the UAM. In this text I outline (in a somewhat playful way) but serious and brief at the same time, the convenience of such “demystification” and I advance in the outline of a model of alternation and convergence of synchronous and asynchronous pedagogical-didactic resources, through technology. -digital network, as a strategic element for future design education.
