Anthropometric characteristics and body composition in mexican older adults age and sex differences

MARIANA LOPEZ ORTEGA PEDRO ARROYO ACEVEDO (2016)

Abstract: Anthropometric reference data for older adults, particularly for the oldest old, are still limited, especially in developing countries. The aim of the present study was to describe sex- and age-specific distributions of anthropometric measurements and body composition in Mexican older adults. The methods included in the present study were assessment of height, weight, BMI, calf circumference (CC), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) as well as knee height in a sample of 8883 Mexican adults aged 60 years and above and the estimation of sex- and age-specific differences in these measures. Results of the study (n 7865, 54 % women) showed that men are taller, have higher BMI, and larger WC than women, whereas women presented higher prevalence of obesity and adiposity. Overall prevalence of underweight was 2·3 % in men and 4·0 % in women, with increasing prevalence with advancing age. Significant differences were found by age group for weight, height, WC, HC, CC, BMI and knee height (P<0·001), but no significant differences in waist–hip circumference were observed. Significant differences between men and women were found in height, weight, circumferences, BMI and knee height (P<0·001). These results, which are consistent with studies of older adults in other countries, can be used for comparison with other Mexican samples including populations living in the USA and other countries with similar developmental and socio-economic conditions. This information can also be used as reference in clinical settings as a tool for detection of individuals at risk of either underweight or overweight and obesity.

Validity of knee-estimated height to assess standing height in older adults: a secondary longitudinal analysis of the Mexican health and aging study

María del Carmen García Peña (2017)

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE:

The main objective was to test the validity of height estimated by knee height in Mexican older adults, as a surrogate for standing height.

DESIGN:

Cohort study.

SETTING:

Data were drawn from the first and third waves of the Mexican Health and Aging Study.

PARTICIPANTS:

Included participants were community-dwelling 50-year or older adults with measured height at baseline and in follow-up. Subjects with a lower limb fracture in the follow-up were excluded.

MEASUREMENTS:

Main measurements were baseline standing height and 11-year follow-up and knee-estimated height in follow-up. Population specific equations were used to estimate standing height from knee height. Comparisons between baseline standing height and knee-derived height were done with simple correlations, limits of agreement (Bland-Altman plot) and Deming regressions.

RESULTS:

A total of 136 50-year or older adults were followed-up for eleven years, with a mean age of 60. There was a positive correlation between knee-estimated height and baseline standing height of 0.895 (p<0.001) for men and of 0.845 (p<0.001) for women. Limits of agreement for men were from -6.95cm to 7.09cm and for women from -6.58cm to 8.44cm.

CONCLUSION:

According to our results, knee-estimated height could be used interchangeably with standing height in Mexican older adults, and these results might apply also to other populations.

EL CONTROL DE LA REFORMA CONSTITUCIONAL EN MEXICO POR ACCION DE INCONSTITUCIONALIDAD

EDGAR RIVERA SANCHEZ (2017)

The constitutional reform in our country is a controversial issue in the political, social and legal spheres, especially because the Constitution is the parameter that governs the jurisdictional guidelines as it is a source of the normative framework. Therefore, when this issue is the object of study, some criteria arise regarding whether the established controls are adequate to guarantee that they do not disrupt the principles contained in the Constitution, such as the division of powers, the form of government, the protection and progressivity of human rights and the constant renewal of powers.

JORGE OLVERA GARCIA HIRAM RAUL PIÑA LIBIEN (2008)

This investigation has its origin, in the study, analysis of the act of the reforming body of the constitution, and the consequences that such action brings with it, this in the sense of the compliance of said organ with the formal limit explicitly indicated in the constitution, as well as unrestricted respect for human rights, particularly observing the principle of progressivity of these, since even when said reforming body does not have an explicit material limit in its chapter of reform, in the first chapter of the so-called rights of Human Rights and Their Guarantees, it is inferred that this body has the material limit of respecting, not diminishing and not suppressing the human rights already enshrined in this constitution.

Body and time in contemporary art: the political reinvention of the body as a duration

Sigifredo Esquivel (2020)

In the beginning there were approximations, then men had the sacred fire that demigods (half human men, human half gods) granted them, not without innumerable sacrifices, then only the profane fire remained, desecrated fire, which they lit to commemorate their pristine origin. Finally the memory remained, imagining intuition, since then they have the arts that still ignite, for some brief moment, the sacred fire of the imagination. This essay projects some meditative incursions into the infinite groove of time that is duration - meat and life of performance arts. This brief essay, risks and experiences around, and from the contours, proliferating and evanescent that make up the plot between body, time, art, performance, politics. This plot allows us to watch over and unveil the possibility of redoing the questions of contemporary art and, perhaps with it, reorienting the possible answers or at least reorienting the quest, which in these times is not a small matter.

ELSA LETICIA GARCIA ARGUELLES (2015)

This paper focuses on Clarice Lispector’s last book Un soplo de

vida (pulsaciones) (1978), which should be read out loud, feeling the energy

of its every word. The novel was written during the author’s agony and

published after her death, when Olga Borelli organised her manuscripts. A

writing that both authorizes and deauthorizes the author figure is analyzed

here, exposing the three subjects that interact in the literary discourse: the

author, Angela’s character, and the reader, who remains attentive to the

voice’s inflections (the air, the breathing, the word and its sound) within

the body of the text. The author/character affirms herself in a metafictional

way inside the story, thus demonstrating that the author does not

disappear, since it exercises its powers in the literary discourse from an

ethic position and its fragility, implied when narrating oneself.

The pulses emerge from the body that writes and talks to try to fill the

emptiness, a body that is still breathing. The univocal condition unfolds

a language that avoids any certainty: words and silences from contrasting

narrative figures, author and character. The following reflections: Why am

I writing? For whom I am writing? To whom am I writing?, arise from

the act of breathing as an intimate action, primordial and vital of literary

creation. The breath of life, the heartbeat, the time flowing through the

veins, the agony, at he same time as a two-voice concert emerges to free

the author’s voice, the character, and the reader in an epiphany game.
