"Our country geography represents a challenge concerning the ability to interconnect distant cities with Multimedia services in all locations, since the current terrestrial system backbone is insufficient to offer those services. The readiness of the Solidaridad Satellites System in Mexico allows to offer digital communication of wide band to any place. A manner of proportioning Multimedia is using ATM type terminals,

with the possibility of taking advantage of the resources of the Solidaridad Satellites. The transmission of SDH signals via satellite presents special characteristics due to the high-speed (155 Mbps in their basic module STM-1) In this work the feasibility of transmission of SDH signals to offer multimedia services, utilizing standard transponders of 36 and 72 MHz in C band is analyzed. In order to achieve high-speeds of 155 bps, the use of multilevel modulation techniques is required (M-QAM and M-PSK type) since these techniques present characteristics that allow the better utilization of the bandwidth, as well as to achieve an error probability on the order of 10-6 to 10-9 suitable for satellites communications. A simulation of the satellite system behavior is carried out, with emphasis in the several parameters involved, like: bandwidth, EIRP, FEC, etc. and the way in which the SDH transmission is affected (in comparison with the terrestrial transmission) due to the delays of inherent propagations in the satellites link.
