Numerous studies have been made in alkali halides doped with divalent cations. In particular the divalent europium ion has been extensively studied in these type of crystals, due to its high fluorescence efficiency. However, a large majority of these investigations has been carried out in the face centered cubic type structure and less in the cesium halide type crystals. Several applications have been found for the former mentioned europium doped alkali halides, such as phosphors, dosimeters, etc. and it would be of interest to know if, it is possible to extend the spectral response using the cesium halides. On the other hand, it is also known that the optical behaviour of divalent europium ions is strongly dependent on their aggregation-precipitation state in the alkali halides. This affects not only the optical properties of the impurity ion but also the mechanical properties of the crystal. However, as far as we know this type of characterisation has not been performed in the europium doped CsCl crystals. In this work the fluorescence spectrum of Eu2+ doped CsCl single crystals has been systematically investigated for different annealing treatments. Quenched samples present an emission band peaking at 22700 cm-1 due to Eu-vacancy complexes and two additional emissions at 22040 cm-1 and 20524 cm which are related to small europium aggregates. Thermal annealing of samples induces the formation of Eu precipitates with a platelet-like structure along {220} crystal planes, giving rise to an emission band at 23120 cm -1 .First result of an Eu2+ induced aggregation by ultraviolet laser irradiation is presented. The excitation spectrum of Eu2+ in this system consists of the usual two broad absorption bands centered at 250 nm and 350 nm, due to transitions from the lowest Till; y stark component of the 8S½ ground state to the T2g, and Eg crystal field components of the 4f65d configuration, respectively. On the other hand, the emission spectrum exciting with 266 nm light consists of two emission bands peaking at 320 nm and 440 nm, while excitation of the low energy Eg level produces one emission band around 440 nm. It is interesting to compare these results with those obtained for the FCC systems where only one emission band 18 always observed. The system CsCl:Eu2+, Mn2+, OH- has been studied by photoluminescence techniques. It has been found that there is an energy transfer between Eu2+ and Mn2+, and OH- and Eu2+ and that the OH- ion increases the energy transfer process between Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions, since the different absorption and emission bands of these ions overlap in the region of 300 to 480 nm. The energy transfer rate between europiurn and manganese ions has been estimated to be of the order of 5x108 s-1. The results point out that the energy transfer process between these ions occurs when they are forming close pairs in the lattice. On the other hand,Mn2+ ions have been used as phosphors in several materials, but their transitions being forbidden are difficult to pump. However it has been shown that the pumping efficiency of these ions can be improved by energy transfer. It is the purpose of this work to report the results obtained for energy transfer between divalent europiurn, OH- and Mn2+ ions in CsCl single crystals.
