Los objetos: ése es el tema de esta tesis. Pero esta tesis no se trata de cualquier tipo de objetos; sino de unos muy particulares que hace más o menos 25 años comenzaron a ser elaborados por las manos de los hombres y mujeres de maíz que habitan entre las cañadas y las montañas del sureste mexicano, para dar cuenta de lo que por aquellos años de mediados de los noventa les acontecía y acontecía para todo el país: una guerrilla que había alzado la voz en contra del Estado y ejército mexicanos a modo de reclamo legítimo por las injusticias que en aquel entonces se vivían, en especial para los pueblos indígenas de México. Retomando, entonces, la propuesta de la sociología cultural, esta tesis recupera y reconstruye cada una de las historias, reflexiones, ideas y pensares que estos objetos albergan en su corazón, a fin de dar cuenta de los diferentes significados sociales que las personas han construido en torno al movimiento zapatista como un hecho social relevante de la vida en colectividad. Por lo tanto, lo que esta tesis puede contar y explicar del movimiento nace de lo social y encuentra en ello su principal valor; al tiempo que permite descubrir esos otros matices, esas otras narrativas, esas otras retóricas que hasta ahora habían estado sólo contenidas en estos guardianes materiales e icónicos que han acompañado el devenir del movimiento a lo largo de todos estos años. Así, desde un enfoque teórico y un diseño metodológico novedoso, las páginas de esta tesis fueron un espacio en blanco para que un pedacito de la historia del movimiento zapatista pudiera ser contado a la luz de sus objetos.
Objects are the main theme for this dissertation. However, it is not just about any kind of objects: it concerns a particular class of handcrafted articles that have been in the make for at least 25 years in the hands of the men and women of maize who dwell in between the mountains and creeks of the Mexican south-eastern region. Those objects account for events happening in the 1990s for both the locals and citizens nationwide: an armed guerrilla raised an outcry against the Mexican State and Army, voicing a legitimate claim against systematic injustice suffered by native nations in Mexico. Taking in consideration the theoretical approach of cultural sociology, this dissertation collects and analyses each of the stories, reflections, ideas and thoughts found in the depth of the heart of each of these objects, in order to explain the different social meanings that people of all sorts have created au tour the Zapatista movement, as a relevant fact of collective life. Whatever can be told and explained of this social movement in this text finds its roots on a deep social dimension. Its worth, therefore, comes from its ability to recognize the value of this perspective by recovering different sorts of social meanings and cultural rhetoric embedded in the objects (which can be understood as iconic material guardians marching side by side along the Zapatistas, across the years). In order to achieve its purpose, contemporary theories and methodologies have been put in practice in a blank canvas that enables for a small but significant portion of the Zapatista history to develop, in the light of the objects that itself has created.
