"With the use of plastic mulch it is possible to have a more efficient use of water and fertilizers, as well as to increase the quality of fruit and yield of crops. It is well known the benefits of the plastic mulch resulting in high fruit yields. However, little it is known on the use of color mulch on fruit yield and it is none the information that exists regarding the influence of the color mulch in the mineral contents in the melon fruit, which is important from the nutritious point of view. Therefore the objective of the present work was to study the mineral content in two cantaloupe hybrids (Cruiser and long life) and in four colors of plastic mulch. The hybrids and four mulch colors (black, coffee, red and blue) and the naked soil gave 10 treatments, which were established in a completely random split plot design, at the Campo Agricola Experimental of the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro, Saltillo, Coahuila, in 2003. Significant differences exist among hybrids in nitrogen , manganese, copper and magnesium content and among colors having mulch in manganese and copper, in seed. In the edible part, it was observed a significant differences among genotypes, in iron, manganese and copper. Among plastic mulch of colors in calcium, iron, manganese and copper. It is concluded that the concentrations of nutrition elements in seeds and melon pulp varies from genotype to genotype as it does the concentration of the nutrition elements in pulp influenced by the color of plastic mulch. Key Words: Cucumis melo L.., plastic mulch, fruit quality, minerals."
