En los últimos años, las constelaciones de satélites en órbita baja han ganado popularidad como infraestructura para ofrecer el servicio de Internet satelital, y se espera que su presencia siga en aumento. Para minimizar la latencia en la transmisión de datos, estos satélites suelen situarse en el rango inferior y medio de la órbita baja terrestre. Comúnmente, los satélites de estas constelaciones emiten una radiación que consiste en un único haz que concentra la potencia en una sola dirección. Sin embargo, debido a la curvatura de la Tierra, las ondas electromagnéticas radiadas por el arreglo de antenas abordo del satélite viajan distancias diferentes. Las ondas que se desplazan en dirección del nadir del satélite hacen un recorrido más corto en comparación con las que se propagan en las direcciones más distantes a este. Este fenómeno ocasiona pérdidas de potencia en los bordes del área de cobertura. Para compensar estas pérdidas, se propone el uso de arreglos de antenas de radiación tipo Isoflux. Estos arreglos distribuyen la densidad de potencia de manera uniforme en el área de cobertura, aumentando la ganancia en direcciones donde el trayecto es más largo. Lograr este tipo de radiación para satélites en órbita baja se vuelve más desafiante. Debido a la proximidad del satélite a la Tierra, es necesario que la radiación se extienda sobre una gran parte del plano de elevación, requiriendo un haz Isoflux que sobrepasa los 100 grados. Esta tesis presenta 18 diseños de arreglos de antenas para satélites en las alturas orbitales de 340 km, 550 km y 1150 km. Para el diseño de estos arreglos, se emplean las geometrías lineales, planares y anillos concéntricos, tanto periódicas como aperiódicas. La distribución de excitaciones de amplitud y la separación entre elementos de antena se optimizan utilizando algoritmos genéticos. La presente tesis incluye un análisis comparativo de las prestaciones de radiación y cantidad de elementos de los diseños presentados, categorizados por altura orbital.
In recent years, the utilization of low-Earth orbit satellite constellations as infrastructure for providing satellite Internet services has experienced substantial growth. The rise of this trend is likely to continue. These satellites are typically placed in the lower to mid-range of low-Earth orbit in order to reduce latency in data transmission. It is common for the antenna arrays on these satellites to emit a single radiation beam that concentrates power in a singular direction. Due to the curvature of the Earth, the electromagnetic waves radiated by the antenna array travel different distances. Waves traveling in the satellite’s nadir direction cover a shorter distance compared to those propagating in more distant directions. This phenomenon causes power losses at the edges of the coverage area. To compensate for these losses, the use of Isoflux radiation antenna arrays is proposed. These arrays distribute the power density evenly across the coverage area, increasing gain in directions where the path is longer. Achieving such radiation characteristics becomes more difficult for low-Earth orbit satellites. Due to the satellite’s proximity to Earth, radiation needs to extend over a large portion of the elevation plane, requiring an Isoflux beam that exceeds 100 degrees. This thesis presents 18 antenna array designs for satellites at the orbital altitudes of 340 km, 550 km, and 1150 km. Linear, planar, and concentric ring geometries are employed, with both periodic and aperiodic antenna element distributions. The distribution of amplitude excitations and the spacing between antenna elements are optimized using genetic algorithms. This thesis includes a comparative analysis of the radiation performance and the number of elements of the presented designs, categorized by orbital altitude.

In arid ecosystems, desert bighorn sheep are dependent on natural waterholes, particularly in summer when forage is scarce and environmental temperatures are high. To detect waterholes in Sierra Santa Isabel, which is the largest area of desert bighorn sheep habitat in the state of Baja California, Mexico, we used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) from Sentinel-2 satellite images. Waterhole detection was based on the premise that sites with greater water availability, where NDVI was higher, can be identified by their density of vegetation greenness. For the detected waterholes, we estimated the escape terrain (presence of cliffs or steep, rocky slopes) around each by the vector ruggedness measure to determine their potential use by desert bighorn sheep based on the animals’ presence as documented by camera traps. We detected 14 waterholes with the NDVI of which 11 were known by land owners and 3 were unrecorded. Desert bighorn were not detected in waterholes with high values of escape terrain, i.e., flat areas. Waterhole detection by NDVI is a simple method, and with the assistance and knowledge of the inhabitants of the Sierra, it was possible to confirm the presence each waterhole in the field. © 2019 Escobar-Flores et al. Vibrissa growth rate in California sea lions based on environmental and isotopic oscillations

Pinniped vibrissae provide information on changes in diet at seasonal and annual scales; however, species-specific growth patterns must first be determined in order to interpret these data. In this study, a simple linear model was used to estimate the growth rate of vibrissae from adult female California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) from San Esteban Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico. The δ15N and δ13C values do not display a marked oscillatory pattern that would permit direct determination of the time period contained in each vibrissa; thus, time (age) was calculated in two ways: 1) based on the correlation between the observed number of peaks (Fourier series) in the δ15N profile and the length of each vibrissa, and 2) through direct comparison with the observed number of peaks in the δ15N profile. Cross-correlation confirmed that the two peaks in the δ15N profile reflected the two peaks in the chlorophyll-a concentration recorded annually around the island. The mean growth rate obtained from the correlation was 0.08 ± 0.01 mm d-1, while that calculated based on the observed number of peaks was 0.10 ± 0.05 mm d-1. Both are consistent with the rates reported for adult females of other otariid species (0.07 to 0.11 mm d-1). Vibrissa growth rates vary by individual, age, sex, and species; moreover, small differences in the growth rate can result in significant differences over the time periods represented by the isotopic signal. Continuous recognition of Mexican Sign Language

La Lengua de Señas Mexicana (LSM) es la lengua utilizada por la comunidad Sorda en México, y, a menudo, subestimada y pasada por alto por la comunidad oyente, lo que resulta en la exclusión sistemática de las personas Sordas en diversos aspectos de la vida. Sin embargo, la tecnología puede desempeñar un papel fundamental en acercar a la comunidad Sorda con la comunidad oyente, promoviendo una mayor inclusión y comprensión entre ambas. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es diseñar, implementar y evaluar un sistema de reconocimiento continuo de señas estáticas en LSM mediante, visión por computadora y técnicas de aprendizaje máquina. Se establecieron objetivos específicos, que incluyen la generación de un conjunto de datos de señas estáticas, pertenecientes al alfabeto manual de la LSM, el diseño de un modelo de reconocimiento, y la evaluación del sistema, tanto en la modalidad aislada como en la continua. La metodología involucra dos evaluaciones distintas. La primera se enfoca en el reconocimiento de señas estáticas en el dominio aislado, para ello se capturaron datos de 20 participantes realizando movimientos de la mano en múltiples ángulos. Se evaluaron diversas técnicas de aprendizaje automático, destacando que el enfoque basado en Máquinas de Soporte Vectorial (SVM) obtuvo los mejores resultados (F1-Score promedio del 0.91). La segunda evaluación se concentra en el reconocimiento continuo de señas estáticas, con datos recopilados de seis participantes con diferentes niveles de competencia en LSM, logrando un rendimiento sólido con errores cercanos al 7 %. Además, se evaluó la viabilidad del sistema en aplicaciones de tiempo real, demostrando un excelente desempeño (velocidad promedio de procesamiento de 45 cuadros por segundo). A pesar de los logros alcanzados, es importante reconocer que este proyecto se centró en el reconocimiento continuo de señas estáticas en LSM. Queda pendiente, como un desafío interesante, la exploración del reconocimiento continuo de señas dinámicas en LSM para futuras investigaciones. Se considera esencial explorar enfoques orientados a la escalabilidad y aplicaciones en tiempo real en investigaciones posteriores.
This study focuses on the continuous recognition of static signs in Mexican Sign Language (Lengua de Señas Mexicana (LSM)), the language used by the Deaf community in Mexico. Despite its significance, LSM is often underestimated and overlooked, leading to the systematic exclusion of Deaf individuals in various aspects of life. The primary objective of this work is to design, implement, and evaluate a continuous static sign recognition system in LSM using computer vision and machine learning techniques. Specific goals were established, including the creation of a dataset of static signs belonging to the manual alphabet of LSM, the design of a recognition model, and the evaluation of the system in both isolated and continuous modes. The methodology involves two distinct evaluations. The first one focuses on the recognition of static signs in the isolated domain, for which data from 20 participants performing hand movements at various angles were collected. Various machine learning techniques were evaluated, with the Máquinas de Soporte Vectorial (SVM)-based approach achieving the best results (average F1-Score of 0.91). The second evaluation centers on the continuous recognition of static signs, using data collected from six participants with varying levels of competence in LSM, achieving robust performance with errors close to 7 %. Furthermore, the feasibility of the system in real-time applications was assessed, demonstrating excellent performance (average processing speed of 45 frames per second). Despite the achievements, it is important to recognize that this project focused on continuous recognition of static signs in LSM. It remains an interesting challenge to explore the continuous recognition of dynamic signs in LSM for future research. It is considered essential to explore scalability-oriented approaches and real-time applications in subsequent investigations.

Trophic ecology of Mexican Pacific harbor seal colonies using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes

There is limited information that provides a comprehensive understanding of the trophic ecology of Mexican Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) colonies. While scat analysis has been used to determine the diet of some colonies, the integrative characterization of its feeding habits on broader temporal and spatial scales remains limited. We examined potential feeding grounds, trophic niche width, and overlap, and inferred the degree of dietary specialization using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in this subspecies. We analyzed δ13C and δ15N on fur samples from pups collected at five sites along the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Fur of natal coat of Pacific harbor seal pups begins to grow during the seventh month in utero until the last stage of gestation. Therefore pup fur is a good proxy for the mother's feeding habits in winter (∼December to March), based on the timing of gestation for the subspecies in this region. Our results indicated that the δ13C and δ15N values differed significantly among sampling sites, with the highest mean δ15N value occurring at the southernmost site, reflecting a well-characterized north to south latitudinal 15N-enrichment in the food web. The tendency identified in δ13C values, in which the northern colonies showed the most enriched values, suggests nearshore and benthic-demersal feeding habits. A low variance in δ13C and δ15N values for each colony (<1‰) and relatively small standard ellipse areas suggest a specialized foraging behavior in adult female Pacific harbor seals in Mexican waters. © 2020 Juárez-Rodríguez et al.
