Amorphous silicon-liquid crystals device forphotonic applications

We demonstrate that an hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a:SiH)-liquid crystals hybrid device could be used for the recording of high resolution (0.8-2 µm) dynamic holograms. A maximum diffraction efficiency of 3.3% was obtained at low power (1.5 mW) He-Ne laser. The nonlinear refractive index change at 0.6 W/cm2 is n2~1x10−2 cm2 /W, although small compared to that obtained in dye-doped liquid crystal, is equal to the reported in pure liquid crystal although with much higher power density (~50 W/cm2 ). The device operates in the red to near-infrared part of the spectrum which makes it attractive due to its potential applications in telecommunications and military applications.

We realize the design and synthesis of partially coherent secondary sources illuminating an ensemble of mobile transmittances in a tandem array. The motion states of the transmittances are random variables which are synchronized by means of the conditional probability density function whose control allows generating sources whose light emission corresponds with a Markov chain. Equivalence between mirror-field-atom and ion-laser interactions

We show that the interaction between a movable mirror with a quantized field that interacts with a two-level atom may be simplified via a transformation that involves Susskind-Glogower operators (SGO). By using this transformation it is easy to show that we can cast the Hamiltonian, after a unitary transformation, into a Hamiltonian that is equivalent to the ion-laser Hamiltonian. We would like to stress that the transformation in terms of SGO already simplifies enough the Hamiltonian in the sense that, in an exact way, it “eliminates” one of the three-subsystems, namely the quantized field.

A Highly Sensitive Fiber Optic Sensor Based on Two-Core Fiber for Refractive Index Measurement

A simple and compact fiber optic sensor based on a two-core fiber is demonstrated for high-performance measurements of refractive indices (RI) of liquids. In order to demonstrate the suitability of the proposed sensor to perform high-sensitivity sensing in a variety of applications, the sensor has been used to measure the RI of binary liquid mixtures. Such measurements can accurately determine the salinity of salt water solutions, and detect the water content of adulterated alcoholic beverages. The largest sensitivity of the RI sensor that has been experimentally demonstrated is 3,119 nm per Refractive Index Units (RIU) for the RI range from 1.3160 to 1.3943. On the other hand, our results suggest that the sensitivity can be enhanced up to 3485.67 nm/RIU approximately for the same RI range.

Proposal for realization of the Majorana equation in a tabletop experiment

We introduce the term Majoranon to describe particles that obey the Majorana equation, which are different from the Majorana fermions widely studied in various physical systems. A general procedure to simulate the corresponding Majoranon dynamics, based on a decomposition of the Majorana equation into two Dirac equations, is described in detail. It allows the simulation of the two-component chiral spinors, the building blocks of modern gauge theories, in the laboratory with current technology. Specifically, a Majoranon in one spatial dimension can be simulated with a single qubit plus a continuous degree of freedom, for example, a single trapped ion. Interestingly, the dynamics of a Majoranon deviates most clearly from that of a Dirac particle in the rest frame, in which the continuous variable is redundant, making a possible laboratory implementation feasible with existing setups.
