Following recent mimosoid phylogenetic and phylogenomic studies demonstrating the non-monophyly of the genus Albizia, we present a new molecular phylogeny focused on the neotropical species in the genus, with much denser taxon sampling than previous studies. Our aims were to test the monophyly of the neotropical section Arthrosamanea, resolve species relationships, and gain insights into the evolution of fruit morphology. We perform a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of sequences of nuclear internal and external transcribed spacer regions and trace the evolution of fruit dehiscence and lomentiform pods. Our results find further support for the non-monophyly of the genus Albizia, and confirm the previously proposed segregation of

Hesperalbizia, Hydrochorea, Balizia and Pseudosamanea. All species that were sampled from section Arthrosamanea form a clade that is sister to a clade composed of Jupunba, Punjuba, Balizia and Hydrochorea. We find that lomentiform fruits are independently derived from indehiscent septate fruits in both Hydrochorea and section Arthrosamanea. Our results show that morphological adaptations to hydrochory, associated with shifts into seasonally flooded habitats, have occurred several times independently in different geographic areas and different lineages within the ingoid clade. This suggests that environmental conditions have likely played a key role in the evolution of fruit types in Albizia and related genera. We resurrect the name Pseudalbizzia to accommodate the species of section Arthrosamanea, except for two species that were not sampled here but have been shown in other studies to be more closely related to other ingoid genera and we restrict the name Albizia s.s. to the species from Africa, Madagascar, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific. Twenty-one new nomenclatural combinations in Pseudalbizzia are proposed, including 16 species and 5 infraspecific varietal names. In addition to the type species Pseudalbizzia berteroana, the genus has 17 species distributed across tropical regions of the Americas, including the Caribbean. Finally, a new infrageneric classification into five sections is proposed and a distribution map of the species of Pseudalbizzia is presented.

The study of forest hydrology and its relationships with climate requires accurate estimates of water inputs, outputs, and changes in reservoirs. Evapotranspiration is frequently the least studied component when addressing the water cycle; thus, it is important to obtain direct measurements of evaporation and transpiration. This study measured transpiration in a tropical dry deciduous forest in Yucatán (Mexico) using the thermal dissipation method (Granier-type sensors) in representative species of this vegetation type. We estimated stand transpiration and its relationship with allometry, diameter-at-breast-height categories, and previously published equations. We found that transpiration changes over time, being higher in the rainy season. Estimated daily transpiration ranged from 0.562 to 0.690 kg m–2 d–1 in the late dry season (April–May) and from 0.686 to 1.29 kg m–2 d–1 in the late rainy season (September–October), accounting for up to 51% of total evapotranspiration in the rainy season. These daily estimates are consistent with previous reports for tropical dry forests and other vegetation types. We found that transpiration was not species-specific; diameter at breast height (DBH) was a reliable way of estimating transpiration because water use was directly related to allometry. Direct measurement of transpiration would increase our ability to accurately estimate water availability and assess the responses of vegetation to climate change. © 2022 by the authors. Soil CO2 efflux fluctuates in three different annual seasons in a semideciduous tropical forest in Yucatan, Mexico

Fernando Arellano-Martín JUAN MANUEL DUPUY RADA ROBERTH ARMANDO US SANTAMARIA José Luis Andrade Torres (2022, [Artículo])

Tropical forest soils store a third of the global terrestrial carbon and control carbon dioxide (CO2) terrestrial effluxes to the atmosphere produced by root and microbial respiration. Soil CO2 efflux varies in time and space and is known to be strongly influenced by soil temperature and water content. However, little is known about the influence of seasonality on soil CO2 efflux, especially in tropical dry forests. This study evaluated soil CO2 efflux, soil temperature, and soil volumetric water content in a semideciduous tropical forest of the Yucatan Peninsula under two sites (flat areas close to and far from hills), and three seasons: dry, wet, and early dry (a transition between the rainy and dry seasons) throughout a year. Additionally, six 24-h periods of soil CO2 efflux were measured within these three seasons. The mean annual soil CO2 efflux was 4±2.2 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1, like the mean soil CO2 efflux during the early dry season. In all seasons, soil CO2 efflux increased linearly with soil moisture, which explained 45% of the spatial-temporal variation of soil CO2 efflux. Soil CO2 efflux was higher close to than far from hills in some months. The daily variation of soil CO2 efflux was less important than its spatial and seasonal variation likely due to small diel variations in temperature. Transition seasons are common in many tropical dry forests, and they should be taken into consideration to have a better understanding of the annual soil CO2 efflux, especially under future climate-change scenarios. © 2022 Mexican Society of Soil Science.

Effects of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins on marine mammals, seabirds and geoduck fisheriesin the Northern Gulf of California during 2015-2019

Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PSTs) are a group of neurotoxins produced by some marine dinoflagellates species. During the harmful algal blooms (HABs) of these species, PSTs accumulate in bivalves which become the main vector of the toxins to humans. Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) is the most important shellfish toxin syndrome in Mexico related to HABs and the only one associated with human fatalities. At least four HABs of Gymnodinium catenatum occurred in the Northern Gulf of California (NGC) between 2015 and 2019. In 2015, a G. catenatum HAB caused multispecies mass mortalities of sea mammals and seabirds. More than 1,000 seabirds and 240 marine mammals were affected. Also, the intoxication of at least five people were associated with this HAB. The presence of G. catenatum was registered from January to May. The sardine “bocona” (Cetengraulis mysticetus) was the main vector of the PSTs to animals. Economic activities have been also impacted by HABs in the NGC. Multiple prohibitions (sanitary bans) to the harvesting and exportation of the geoduck clam Panopea globosa have been implemented in the region. The metabolism of the PSTs in the siphon and visceral mass was characterized, this information is necessary when creating management plans for this important fishery. A maximum toxicity of 16,740 µgSTX eq Kg-1 was detected on the visceral mass, with a depuration rate of 4.3% day-1. C1&2 were the most abundant analogues detected in geoduck samples collected during the HAB appearance. The concentration of these analogues decreased in the first weeks, and the more toxic analogues GTX5, dcGTX3 and dcSTX were detected. Five and seven months after the occurrence of the HAB, M-type analogues and STX were detected also in the visceral mass of the clams. This is the first description of the biotransformation of PST in P. globlosa. Monitoring of PSTs levels in bivalves, and particularly during HABs requires reliable results in a short period of time. To meet analytic demands, Mexican Health Authorities implemented the Scotia Rapid Testing (SRT). SRT and HPLC-PCOX, the reference methodology in the US and Canada, were compared with the mouse bioassay (MBA), the reference methodology in Mexico. The good correlation (R2=0.91) between HPLC-PCOX and MBA indicates that HPLC-PCOX is suitable for monitoring PSTs in P. globosa. However, it was found that STR was not an accurate methodology as more than 67% of false positives were registered. G. catenatum HABs have occurr

Evaluation of mitochondrial accumulation of mito-targeted synthetic estrogens on in vitro model

Mitochondria are essential organelles of eukaryotic cells, and their dysfunction is associated with the onset and development of neurodegenerative, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, it is important to develop treatments to improve mitochondrial function. One of the options are estrogens, these hormones have a protective role in cellular function by participating in the regulation of mitochondrial function, making estrogens candidates to be a potential treatment for diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunction. One of the alternative treatments are mito-targeted molecules, which are biologically active molecules conjugated with lipophilic cations. These mito-targeted molecules can accumulate inside mitochondria more than non-targeted molecules. This project aims to synthesize mito-targeted estrogens by conjugating a lipophilic cation, triphenylphosphonium, to a parent estrogenic compound. Our hypothesis is that these novel molecules will accumulate in the interior of the mitochondria and will have more biological activity than the non-targeted estrogen. We synthesized two mito-targeted estrogens for this project and evaluated the mitochondrial accumulation in an estrogen-sensitive in vitro model, comparing their accumulation to non-targeted estrogens. The results indicate mito-targeted estrogens accumulate in mitochondria more than the non-targeted estrogens, showing that mito-targeted estrogens have an accumulation capacity. This insight will make new treatments for diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunction.

What Are Medusozoans, and Why Do They Sting?

José Agüero Mariae del Carmen Estrada González Leonela Rosales Catalán Ariadne Molina Alonso MARIA DE LOS ANGELES MENDOZA BECERRIL (2022, [Artículo])

"Medusozoans are marine animals without backbones that live near the coasts, or in the depths of the oceans. Some of them are large, but others are even tinier than a seed. Medusozoans have been living on Earth for more than 600 million years. Their bodies are 95% water. Some medusozoans live attached to a surface, but others can swim freely. All medusozoans have tentacles, armed with stinging cells called nematocysts. When the nematocysts are triggered, the tiny stingers inside them can travel at speeds up to 67 km per hour. Around 3% of medusozoans are harmful to humans. Therefore, when visiting beaches where these harmful medusozoans live, it is necessary to take some precautions. Wearing protective clothing and not touching a medusozoan stranded on the beach will help you stay safe and healthy, so you can enjoy your beach day!"

celulasas, xilanasas, esterasas y peroxidasas.

esponja marina Steletta normani.
