Multiple approaches to understanding the taxonomic status of an enigmatic new scorpion species of the genus Tityus (Buthidae) from the biogeographic island of Paraje Tres Cerros (Argentina)

Andres Alejandro Ojanguren Affilastro (2017, [Artículo])

Tityus curupi n. sp., belonging to the bolivianus complex, is described from the biogeographically distinct area of Paraje Tres Cerros in north-eastern Argentina. We also present a molecular species delimitation analysis between Tityus curupi n. sp. and its sister species Tityus uruguayensis Borelli 1901 to confirm species integrity. Furthermore, a cytogenetic analysis is presented for these two species which contain different multivalent associations in meiosis, as a consequence of chromosome rearrangements, and the highest chromosome numbers in the genus.

SALVADOR REYES FERNANDEZ NORMA SAMANTA ROMERO CASTRO NATALIA HERNANDEZ TREVIÑO DANIEL SANDOVAL GUEVARA XENIA TERESA COBOS CRUZ (2023, [Artículo])

Introduction: the elevation of the transcrestal floor of the maxillary sinus consists of the vertical reconstruction of the atrophic alveolar ridge in an apical direction, with which it is possible to place the correct number and length of oral implants. Objective: to describe the procedure of a case of transcrestal maxillary sinus floor elevation with the placement of three dental implants. Clinical case: 62 year old female patient with missing teeth 16, 25 and 26. Treatment: three implants were placed to replace the missing teeth. Due to the decrease in height of the remaining alveolar ridge due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses, elevation of the sinus floor was planned with the transcrestal Summers¿s technique and placement of graft material. Results: by means of the grafts, sufficient height was achieved for the correct stability of the implants, each área had an average gain of 3 mm in bone height, with which length was obtained to give the implants adequate primary stability. Conclusion: sinus floor elevation with a transcrestal approach is a good alternative for rehabilitation with implants in the posterior edentulous sector, associated with pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses.

Sexual harassment and stalking in female university students: negative emotions and coping with these forms of gender-based violence

Karla Jazmín Rodríguez Hernández ADRIANA RODRIGUEZ BARRAZA Maria Carolina Agoff (2023, [Artículo, Artículo])

Stalking and sexual harassment, as expressions of gender violence in the field of higher education, are very pressing problems as they have been exhibited by the protest movements that have arisen in Higher Education Institutions. The objective of this work is to analyze the narratives of university women who experienced stalking and/or sexual harassment in Higher Education Institutions in the municipalities of Tampico and Ciudad Madero in the state of Tamaulipas. The purpose was to learn about their experiences and their way of dealing with these forms of gender violence, using qualitative research and a phenomenological design. The technique used for data collection was the semi-structured interview. The selection of the informants was based on intentional sampling and the number of cases examined was guided by the saturation criterion, the total number of participants being thirteen. The analysis of the interviews shows that acts of stalking and sexual harassment provoke various emotions in women that can shed light on the problem of violence from the perspective of the victims, instead of considering only their own explanations, which are often rationalized or consistent with socially legitimized meanings. In sum, the study of emotions allows us to conclude that women within the university context suffer from a psychophysical discomfort that does not allow them to live a full university life.

An anion conductance, the essential component of the hydroxyl-radical-induced Ion current in plant roots

IGOR POTTOSIN ALBERTO ISAAC ZEPEDA JAZO JAYACUMAR BOSE (2018, [Artículo])

Oxidative stress signaling is essential for plant adaptation to hostile environments. Previous studies revealed the essentiality of hydroxyl radicals (HO•)-induced activation of massive K+ efflux and a smaller Ca2+ influx as an important component of plant adaptation to a broad range of abiotic stresses. Such activation would modify membrane potential making it more negative. Contrary to these expectations, here, we provide experimental evidence that HO• induces a strong depolarization, from −130 to −70 mV, which could only be explained by a substantial HO•-induced efflux of intracellular anions. Application of Gd3+ and NPPB, non-specific blockers of cation and anion conductance, respectively, reduced HO• induced ion fluxes instantaneously, implying a direct block of the dual conductance. The selectivity of an early instantaneous HO•-induced whole cell current fluctuated from more anionic to more cationic and vice versa, developing a higher cation selectivity at later times. The parallel electroneutral efflux of K+ and anions should underlie a substantial leak of the cellular electrolyte, which may affect the cell’s turgor and metabolic status. The physiological implications of these findings are discussed in the context of cell fate determination, and ROS and cytosolic K+ signaling
