Internal erosion under spillway rested on an embakment dam

JOSE RAUL FLORES BERRONES (2015)

This paper presents the investigation about the mechanism of internal erosion caused in the right abutment of the Shahghasem dam’s spillway. Shahghasem dam is an earthen dam located in Yasouj, in southwest of Iran. A significant hole and pipe have been observed in the corner of the right abutment from upstream view. The foundation is Marlstone, which has low cohesion and susceptible for internal erosion and piping in some conditions. Going through details of the design maps has shown that Lane’s criteria for selecting safe dimensions of the seepage control measures have not been considered properly. A series of the supportive walls are designed to attach to the right part of the spillway in order to increase the length of seepage. The pipe route of the erosion should also be grouted with high quality concrete.

Nostalgia integrates bitter-sweet emotions experimented over stimuli that reconnect present time to past events. The past events retrieved by nostalgia are individuals’ autobiographic memories. Memories are retrieved in a gradual process. However, memories with highly emotional significance would be easily retrieved. Nostalgic memories commonly bring back events with social groups such as family, and friends. Once nostalgia is experienced, it would have effects on consumption behavior, increasing the probability of buying a nostalgic product. Although the process leading to nostalgia, and its effects, have been described by previous literature, the social impact of nostalgic behavior has not been analyzed. Understanding the effects of social interaction along the nostalgic process is necessary to comprehend its full effect on nostalgic behavior.

Mix-method research was used to obtain qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative research used two different gathering techniques: netnography and in-depth interviews. For quantitative research, an online survey research instrument was developed. Data were analyzed by using SPSS software to validate the hypotheses established for this research. Additionally, AMOS software was used to develop a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the items of the questionnaire, the constructs developed, and their interactions.

The main contribution of this research is the analysis of social connection on nostalgia formation and consumption. Nostalgic emotions are triggered by a stimulus that detonates one or several memories. Usually, memories retrieved involve social interaction that makes them highly emotionally valued by individuals. Memories retrieved mainly generate a positive nostalgic reaction. The nostalgic reaction generated begins a synchronization process between an individual’s self-image and social expectations. If congruence is achieved, an individual may act upon nostalgia by consuming products for his/herself or purchasing something for someone else to develop a stronger connection through nostalgia. This research identifies the role of social groups and context on nostalgia: helping nostalgic memory formation and retrieval, taking part in the synchronization process to allow consumption, and are experienced in purchasing products/brands for someone else.

Using Halin graph decomposition for the design of self-stabilizing algorithm

Let G = (V, E) be an undirected graph. The problem of finding a strong stable set in G, is to identify a set S ⊆ V , such that given two arbitrary vertices of S, they are separated from each other by at least three edges. Finding a set S of maximum size belongs to the class NP-Hard. On the other hand, the problem of finding a total dominanting set in G is to identify a set D ⊆ V , such that any vertex in V has at least one neighbor belonging to D. Finding a set D of minimum size also belongs to the class NP-Hard. In this thesis work, two algorithms were designed, one that solves the problem of finding a maximal strong stable set and one that solves the problem of finding a minimal total dominanting set. These two problems are less restrictive than the optimization versions described at the beginning of this text and are known to belong to the P class. The designed algorithms run on a distributed system, are self-stabilizing, are transient fault tolerant, and work for Halin graphs. Halin graphs belong to the 2-outerplanar class of graphs and have the property that they can be split into two well-known subgraphs, a tree and a cycle. The proposed algorithms take advantage of the above property to decrease the complexity of the algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed algorithms, which run in linear time in the number of vertices, are the fastest existing algorithms for the maximal strong stable set and minimal total dominating set problems.

Estimating lime requirements for tropical soils: Model comparison and development

Fernando Aramburu Merlos João Vasco Silva Frédéric Baudron Robert Hijmans (2023)

Acid tropical soils may become more productive when treated with agricultural lime, but optimal lime rates have yet to be determined in many tropical regions. In these regions, lime rates can be estimated with lime requirement models based on widely available soil data. We reviewed seven of these models and introduced a new model (LiTAS). We evaluated the models’ ability to predict the amount of lime needed to reach a target change in soil chemical properties with data from four soil incubation studies covering 31 soil types. Two foundational models, one targeting acidity saturation and the other targeting base saturation, were more accurate than the five models that were derived from them, while the LiTAS model was the most accurate. The models were used to estimate lime requirements for 303 African soil samples. We found large differences in the estimated lime rates depending on the target soil chemical property of the model. Therefore, an important first step in formulating liming recommendations is to clearly identify the soil property of interest and the target value that needs to be reached. While the LiTAS model can be useful for strategic research, more information on acidity-related problems other than aluminum toxicity is needed to comprehensively assess the benefits of liming.

JESUS ALFREDO ARAUJO LEON Ivonne Sánchez del Pino Víctor Aguilar Hernández SERGIO RUBEN PERAZA SANCHEZ ROLFFY RUBEN ORTIZ ANDRADE ANDRES XINGU LOPEZ Ligia Guadalupe Brito Argáez J. NAHIM ALCOCER ESPEJEL (2023)
