Diluted density. Urban planning in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area

Sheila Ferniza Quiroz Jesús Manuel Fitch Osuna (2021, [Artículo, Artículo])

The Monterrey Metropolitan Area (mma) in Northern Mexico has had an expansive and dispersed growth in recent decades. In 35 years, the city doubled its population and grew 8 times in territory (Secretariat for Sustainable Development, 2020). As a mitigation measure and with the objective of repopulating the areas within the city, urban regulations have been promoted that allow higher density and building potentials in some municipalities; however, the efforts are isolated and without metropolitan coordination. What are the urban regulation guidelines in the municipalities of the mma? How dense are its municipalities? Where are located the densest areas of the city? The objective of this research is to establish the current state of local regulation regarding urban development and to map the housing density to identify the locations with the lowest and highest density at the mma. The gross density at the Ageb scale is mapped for the 18 municipalities of the mma through the QGis software; data from the Inegi 2020 National Population and Housing Census is used. It is found that the peripheral municipalities of recent incorporation to the mma, unlike those of greater urbanization, lack urban development plans, and that most of the municipalities do not have updated regulations based on the current laws. The areas with the highest density are located in the peripheral municipalities, associated with the construction of low-income mass housing, and those with the lowest density in interior municipalities in areas of higher socioeconomic status, diluting the small efforts of densification in the city.

Habitability conditions for floods: the case of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico

MARCELINO GARCIA BENITEZ Saul Nucamendi Hernandez Omar Ávila Flores (2022, [Artículo, Artículo])

At present, there are changes in the environment that favor the presence of extreme climatic phenomena such as floods, this exposure implies that the populations of urban areas suffer effects on their material assets, which limits their capacity for individual and / or family development. Given the lack of local territorial planning, the establishment of colonies was allowed on the banks of the Sabinal river and its tributaries that present episodes of flooding during the rainy season (Sistema Municipal de Protección Civil, 2015).

The study evaluates the habitability conditions of the urban population exposed to flooding, the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas is taken as a reference, since historically it is a recurring problem during the summer. The methodology interrelates geostatistical, spatial and cartographic databases with hemerographic information sources based on the review of the literature for the construction of the general index, determined in dimensions that group social, economic, educational aspects, availability of basic services, goods with those that count the dwellings and their accessibility, etc., on a geographical scale of Urban Geostatistical Areas (AGEB).

The results obtained generated an index on the distribution of habitability conditions by urban Ageb, they are interrelated with spatial data on floods and their relationship with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (ODS), which proposes to improve infrastructure conditions in cities and towns. sustainable communities so that the inequality originated among the population exposed to future extreme flood events that occur in the different areas that make up the city is reduced.

Detection of non-verbal behavior in human-robot interaction

Nonverbal communication plays a vital role in human interaction. In the context of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), social robots are designed primarily for verbal-based communication with humans, making nonverbal communication an open research area. We present a flexible, open framework called Software Architecture for Nonverbal Interaction in Human-Robot Interaction (SANI-HRI) designed to facilitate nonverbal interactions in HRI. Among its components it has a P2P Browser-Based Computational Notebook, leveraged to code, run, and share reactive programs. Machine-learning models can be included for real-time recognition of gestures, poses, and moods, employing protocols such as MQTT. Another key component is a broker for distributing data among different physical devices like the robot, wearables, and environmental sensors and also machine learning models. We demonstrate this framework’s utility through three interaction scenarios: (i) the first one employing proxemics and gaze direction to initiate an impromptu encounter, (ii) a second that uses computer vision techniques to detect and analyze facial and body expressions, as well as the use of biometric sensors to obtain heart rate data during a workout routine, and (iii) a third one incorporating object recognition and a Large-Language Model to suggest meals to be cooked based on available ingredients. These scenarios illustrate how the framework’s components can be seamlessly integrated to address new scenarios, where robots need to infer nonverbal cues from users.
