Towards an Emotional Validation of Heuristic Approaches for Usability Evaluation

YAZMIN MAGALLANES VELAZQUEZ ARIEL MOLINA RUEDA JOSE ALFREDO SANCHEZ HUITRON MARIBEL YENNY MENDEZ BERNAL (2012, [Artículo])

This paper presents an initial investigation on how an emotional assessment of user interfaces may extend and validate the heuristic evaluation of the usability of interactive systems. Through the elicitation of responses from two groups of users, we focused on detecting whether a correlation exists between emotional assessment of specific interface issues and the corresponding evaluation by interaction experts. Using a prototypical multi-tactile interface and a heuristic

approach, we first obtained feedback from interaction experts regarding its potential problems and issues. We then devised scenarios for observing novel users and eliciting their emotional responses to the issues raised by our experts. Our initial findings indicate a significant correlation exists between the issues raised by expert users and the emotional responses of novel users, but also that some of those issues do not necessarily lead to long lasting negative emotions. We thus posit that emotional evaluation of interactive systems may be helpful for enriching and validating heuristic approaches for usability evaluation.

Given the outstanding global progress of research on the hydraulic pathway in plants, and its important role as an indicator of plant mortality risk, we reviewed: (1) the adaptive basis of hydraulic traits and their importance for overall plant function; (2) the number of primary scientific articles on plant hydraulics that have been produced in Mexico in the last 40 years, (3) research related to specific environments in Mexico, and (4) the possible applications of plant hydraulics to natural resource management. Our systematic review included 83 articles. The number of publications per year steadily increased over time, reaching its maximum in 2021. Veracruz and Yucatán are the states where the majority of scientific articles on plant hydraulics have been produced, but for most states less than two publications on this subject appeared in ca. 40 years, and none was found for Oaxaca and Chiapas, the most biodiverse states. In plant hydraulics, the most studied biome in Mexico was the tropical dry forest, followed by crops; trees were the most studied growth-form, followed by herbaceous crops and epiphytes. We point to the need of enhancing research in the interface between plant hydraulic function and remote sensing, as well as developing applications in adaptive forest management and ecological restoration. We hope that this review may ignite a national collaborative effort to quantify critical traits that could inform the hydraulic functioning of Mexican ecosystems, particularly in the underrepresented and highly diverse states of Mexico. © 2022 Sociedad Botanica de Mexico, A.C. Soil moisture content and maize grain yield under conventional and conservation agriculture practices - results of short term field tests in liselo, Namibia

Christian Thierfelder (2023, [Artículo])

This article focuses on the results from trials developed to monitor the short-term effects of conventionally tilled systems versus CA on soil quality and crop productivity under conditions of the major cropping systems in central, north-central and north-eastern regions of Namibia. Conventional tillage (CT), Minimum tillage (MT), Minimum tillage, mulch (MT-M), Minimum tillage, rotation (MT-R) and Minimum tillage, mulch and rotation (MT-MR) were the primary treatments tested. Significant differences (p≤0.000) among the treatments were observed in the 0-60 cm soil profiles where MT-M plots had the highest soil moisture content (39.8 mm, Standard Error of Mean 0.2815) over the study period. A significant difference (p=0.0206) in grain yield was observed in the second season with CT plots yielding the highest grain yield (3852.3 kg ha-1, standard error of mean 240.35). Results suggest that CA has the potential to increase water conservation and contribute to reduction of the risk of crop failure. Climate change driven degradation under conventional tillage necessitate alternative sustainable tillage methods. Conservation tillage methods and conservation agricultural practices that minimize soil disturbance while maintaining soil cover need to be adopted more locally as viable alternatives to conventional tillage.

Morphological variation of Myrmecocystus ants from the coastal dunes of Baja California, Mexico

The Baja California peninsula has isolated coastal dunes on which ants of the genus Myrmecocystus Snelling, 1976 are distributed, whose distribution is restricted in these habitats; The arthropofauna of these dunes is poorly understood. The morphological differences of Myrmecocystus were evaluated from six populations collected along the Baja California peninsula corresponding to six dunes. To measure the morphological differences of the populations, 109 individuals were analyzed, 20 for each dune, except for one dune where only nine individuals were collected. To evaluate intra- and interpopulation shape changes, two morphological-functional structures were analyzed: 1) head, including the clypeus related to competition and feeding, and 2) thorax, including the propodeum, which shows the caste difference between workers. With a fixed camera mounted on a stereoscopic microscope, 198 digital microphotographs were taken to evaluate shape changes through a geometric morphometry analysis. Differences associated with geographic isolation were detected. The variation observed in the head can help to differentiate the populations of the north of the peninsula (Santa Rosaliíta, Punta Mazo, Guerrero Negro, and Punta Abreojos) and those of the south (Las Barrancas and Magdalena Bay), the morphological variation of the thorax did not show significant differences. There are intraspecific variations that could be a consequence of environmental conditions (phenotypic) or random processes such as gene drift. The present study yields data on the morphological variation of six populations representing two species of Myrmecocystus not yet described for the Baja California peninsula. These results will have an impact on the description and a documented increase in the biodiversity of the Baja Californian arthropofauna.

Using Observed Residual Error Structure Yields the Best Estimates of Individual Growth Parameters

Marcelo Vidal Curiel Bernal EUGENIO ALBERTO ARAGON NORIEGA MIGUEL ANGEL CISNEROS MATA LAURA SANCHEZ VELASCO SYLVIA PATRICIA ADELHEID JIMENEZ ROSENBERG ALEJANDRO FRANCISCO PARES SIERRA (2021, [Artículo])

"Obtaining the best possible estimates of individual growth parameters is essential in studies of physiology, fisheries management, and conservation of natural resources since growth is a key component of population dynamics. In the present work, we use data of an endangered fish species to demonstrate the importance of selecting the right data error structure when fitting growth models in multimodel inference. The totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) is a fish species endemic to the Gulf of California increasingly studied in recent times due to a perceived threat of extinction. Previous works estimated individual growth using the von Bertalanffy model assuming a constant variance of length-at-age. Here, we reanalyze the same data under five different variance assumptions to fit the von Bertalanffy and Gompertz models. We found consistent significant differences between the constant and nonconstant error structure scenarios and provide an example of the consequences using the growth performance index _0 to show how using the wrong error structure can produce growth parameter values that can lead to biased conclusions. Based on these results, for totoaba and other related species, we recommend using the observed error structure to obtain the individual growth parameters."

Recent advances on research of native prawn Macrobrachium americanum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) with aquaculture and conservation purposes

Yuneisy Milagro Agüero Fernández MIRIAM VICTORIA MARTIN MANZO MARITZA LOURDES SOBERANES YEPIZ Marcelo Ulises García Guerrero Yuniel Méndez Martínez Luis Hector Hernandez Hernandez Laura S López Greco Edilmar Cortés Jacinto (2022, [Artículo])

"Where good management practices on aquaculture are mandatory. The economic and ecological importance of prawns of the Genus Macrobrachium cause an impact at a global level involving economic, academic and social aspects. Macrobrachium americanum appears as one of the genus species with high nutritional value and an economic demand in the national and international markets, as well as a vital income for fisherman and producers of this species. For researchers, it is a challenge to find solutions to culture and propose conservation measures for M. americanum with emphasis on development, nutrition and reproduction. Although there are scientific studies supporting the economic importance of this species, our knowledge about its cultivation, reproduction and conservation is limited. This paper summarizes the latest studies made in cooperation with M. americanum in research lead by the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, Mexico. After several years of continuous research, it is considered that those efforts have produced useful information for the sustainable exploitation, conservation and basic management practices of this species."
