Synthesis of pillared laminar materials with variable oxides for degradation of contaminants in liquid phase

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is essential for the successful degradation of organic contaminants in liquid media. This advanced oxidation process has become one of the most interesting for the treatment of wastewater containing organic compounds harmful to the environment, such as dyes. In this work, the photocatalytic activity of zeolite MCM-22 pillared with SiO2/TiO2 (also known as MCM36) was evaluated for the degradation of acid blue 113, a diazo dye frequently used in the textile industry. MCM-22 zeolites were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, using the SiO2/TiO2 pillaring process in different molar ratios, modified with the assistance of isopropanol together with a wet impregnation of MnO2 (1 and 2 %). The mesoporous structures of the zeolites were confirmed by Xray diffraction and N2 physisorption analyses. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy results indicated the presence of Ti and Mn oxide species. With scanning electron microscopy, the samples were observed panoramically, while with transmission electron microscopy the dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles was observed, where it was possible to see their interplanar distance, identifying the (100) plane, characteristic of the anatase phase, as well as the lamellar and mesoporous structure of MCM-22. The amounts of Ti and Mn introduced to the samples were obtained by ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy) analysis. The photocatalytic degradation results showed that the most active photocatalyst was MCM-36 0:1 achieving 79.64%, followed by MCM-36 1:10 (42.70%), 1:5 (34.83%) and 1:3 (25.99%). It was observed that the activity of TiO2 can be inhibited by the addition of MnO2, which poisons the catalyst, leading to the formation of a heterojunction between TiO2 and MnO2, forming centers that accelerate photorecombination.

Ricardo Rivera Martinez Ivón Mercedes Ramírez Morillo José Arturo de Nova Vázquez GERMAN CARNEVALI FERNANDEZ CONCHA Juan Pablo Pinzón Katya J. Romero-Soler NESTOR EDUARDO RAIGOZA FLORES (2022, [Artículo])

Background: Hechtioideae is a group of Bromeliaceae that is distributed in Megamexico III. In recent years, evolutionary relationships within this lineage have been studied; however, the biogeography of these plants have not yet been explored from a phylogenetic framework. The integration of geographic and phylogenetic information in the evolutionary study of organisms has facilitated the identification of patterns, as well as the exploration of new hypotheses that allow for the understanding the processes that have influenced the evolutionary history of lineages. Questions and/or Hypotheses: What is the biogeographic history of this lineage? How Hechtioideae has diversified over time? Results: The Neotropical region has the highest species richness of Hechtioideae and the Mexican Transition Zone is the area with the greatest phylogenetic diversity. This lineage presented its highest diversification rate during the late Miocene and Pleistocene (6.5-1 Ma). The ancestral area of the group corresponds to the Neotropical region and the Mexican Transition Zone. In addition, Hechtioideae spread across its current ranges through multiple dispersal events associated with climatic and geological events during the last 10 Ma. Conclusions: Hechtioideae is a group of recent origin whose evolutionary history has been strongly influenced by geological and climatic events over the past 10 Ma, such as the glacial and interglacial periods of the Pleistocene and the great tectonic and volcanic activity that led to the formation of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a contaminant of industrial origin present in effluents and natural waters. It represents a high environmental and human health risk due to its inherent toxicity and limited degradation capacity. In this context, electrochemical sensors, generally based on carbon electrodes, are fundamental to detecting and quantifying this molecule. However, these devices face substantial challenges from electrochemical inactivation, a phenomenon attributed to forming an insulating layer or polymerization during the sensing process. The description of the BPA/electrode surface reaction mechanisms can be helpful to identify the active sites and contribute to the elucidation of the polymerization process.

In this research, a theoretical study was implemented using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to analyze in depth the interactions between BPA in its various oxidation states: oxidized (O), reduced (R), and monoprotonated (r*) and carbon materials. For this purpose, functionalized graphene (basal plane, saddle edge, and zigzag) was used as a representative model of the electrode surface. Finally, the possibilities of BPA dimerization or polymerization on various functional groups are evaluated. The main objective is detecting specific functional groups that can induce secondary processes, which act as obstacles to the effective electrochemical detection of BPA. The resulting information is a valuable resource for designing and optimizing electrochemical sensors with more robust and sophisticated performance.

The general synopsis of this work is detailed below, describing each chapter and the

stages involved in the study of the theoretical DFT model for the BPA/electrode surface reaction system.

Chapter 1. State of the art of industrial uses and the environmental implications associated with Bisphenol A. One of the problems that stands out is the need for precise detection of this molecule using electrochemical sensors, whose limitation is the inactivation they present. The justification of the work is also described, as well as the use of the computational model, in addition to its objectives and hypothesis.

Chapter 2. Description of the theoretical foundations based on first principles of Density Functional Theory (DFT), focusing on approaches to develop representative models that optimize calculation time. Additionally, the structure and surface characteristics of the carbon materials considered in the modeling process are detailed.

Chapter 3. Detail of the construction process of the surface model for the study of BPA/electrode surface interactions, where the basal plane model was used, as well as the chair- type and zigzag edges of graphene, with functionalizations that include COOH, OH, ether, epoxide, ketone, and hydrogen endings.

Revisiting the phylogeny and taxonomy of the Pithecellobium clade (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) with new generic circumscriptions

Iván Tamayo-Cen Benjamin Torke JOSE ENRIQUE LOPEZ CONTRERAS GERMAN CARNEVALI FERNANDEZ CONCHA Ivón Mercedes Ramírez Morillo Lilia Lorena Can Itza RODRIGO STEFANO DUNO (2022, [Artículo])

We present the most complete molecular phylogeny to date of the Pithecellobium clade of subfamily Caesalpinioideae. This neotropical group was informally recognised (as the Pithecellobium alliance) at the end of the 20th century by Barneby and Grimes (1996) and includes five genera and 33 species distributed from the southern United States and Caribbean Islands to north-eastern South America. Our aims were to further test the monophyly of the group and its genera and to identify sister group relationships within and amongst the genera. A phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences (ITS and ETS) was performed. The results provide further support for the monophyly of the Pithecellobium clade. The genera Ebenopsis, Pithecellobium and Sphinga were strongly supported as monophyletic. Havardia and Painteria were found to be non-monophyletic, prompting their re-circumscriptions and the description of two new genera: Gretheria and Ricoa. New combinations are made for the three species transferred to the new genera.

The obligation to ensure that a system or piece of equipment achieves its maximum performance and functionality, and to correct any failures that may occur, has led to the need to develop a specialized field dedicated exclusively to meeting these obligations. This has given rise to the field of maintenance, the basic aim of which is to ensure the correct functioning of the equipment or installations on which the work is carried out, and to correct and prevent any failures or problems in the systems concerned; maintenance can be applied in a wide range of sectors where it is necessary to prevent or correct an operation, and the renewable energy sector is no exception. In particular, the maintenance of photovoltaic systems connected to the grid (SFIR) aims to bring the installation to its best operational and functional range in order to guarantee energy production; it is for this reason that the energy sector has participated in the development of a branch dedicated to the operation and maintenance (O&M) of photovoltaic systems. This article presents the results of a preventive maintenance study in a photovoltaic plant located in the state of Aguascalientes, carried out by Sunna Power, a company dedicated to providing maintenance services to SFIR in Mexico. The study examines the condition of the installation before maintenance and the situation after maintenance. Although SFIR requires little maintenance, this article aims to demonstrate that the implementation of a maintenance plan in the plants can nevertheless have a positive impact on the energy production of the system, displaying the results obtained in the maintenance carried out on the photovoltaic installation.

Seed integrity, effect of temperature and storage time on germination of Populus luziarum and P. primaveralepensis, endangered subtropical species from Mexico

César Jacobo Pereira MIGUEL ANGEL MUÑIZ CASTRO JOSE ANTONIO VAZQUEZ GARCIA Joel David Flores Rivas ALEJANDRO MUÑOZ URIAS FRANCISCO MARTIN HUERTA MARTINEZ (2022, [Artículo])

"Background: Populus luziarum and P. primaveralepensis are endemic species of western Mexico; growing in riparian forests they are critically endangered. The best way to conserve their seeds is unknown, which could be limiting for their conservation.

Hypothesis: The germinability of both subtropical species is like that of boreal and template Salicaceae species that disperse seeds in spring and early summer, as they germinate quickly with high percentages, and rapidly lose their viability when stored at ambient temperature.

Studied species: Populus luziarum and P. primaveralepensis. Study site and dates: Western Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Jalisco, Mexico. October 2019.

Methods: The physical integrity of the seeds was assessed by X-ray imaging and compared with germinability. In addition, the effect of storage time (nine weeks) under two temperatures (4 and 21 °C) on the percentage and mean germination rate was evaluated.

Results: No significant differences were found between physical integrity and germination in freshly collected seeds for both species. Germination in the first 24 hrs was 91 and 95 % for Populus luziarum and P. primaveralepensis, respectively (week 0). Germination percentages were lower when stored at 21 °C, but P. primaveralepensis was decreased more slowly.

Conclusions: Seeds of subtropical Populus respond similarly to those of species from temperate and boreal climates with early seed dispersal, a crucial condition for establishing ex situ reforestation and conservation programs."

Gamma-diversity partitioning of gobiid fishes (Teleostei: Gobiidae) ensemble along of Eastern Tropical Pacific: Biological inventory, latitudinal variation and species turnover

OMAR VALENCIA MENDEZ (2018, [Artículo])

Gobies are the most diverse marine fish family. Here, we analysed the gamma-diversity (γ-diversity) partitioning of gobiid fishes to evaluate the additive and multiplicative components of α and β-diversity, species replacement and species loss and gain, at four spatial scales: sample units, ecoregions, provinces and realms. The richness of gobies from the realm Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) is represented by 87 species. Along latitudinal and longitudinal gradients, we found that the γ-diversity is explained by the β-diversity at both spatial scales, ecoregions and provinces. At the ecoregion scale, species are diverse in the north (Cortezian ecoregion) and south (Panama Bight ecoregion) and between insular and coastal ecoregions. At the province scale, we found that the species turnover between the warm temperate Northeast Pacific (WTNP), Tropical East Pacific (TEaP) and the Galapagos Islands (Gala) was high, and the species nestedness was low. At the ecoregion scale, historical factors, and phylogenetic factors have influenced the hotspots of gobiid fish biodiversity, particularly in the Cortezian, Panama Bight and Cocos Island ecoregions, where species turnover is high across both latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. At the provincial level, we found that the contributions of the β-diversity from north to south, in the WTNP, TEaP and Gala were high, as result of the high number of unique species. Species turnover was also high at this scale, with a low contribution from species nestedness that was probably due to the low species/gene flow within the provinces. These results highlight the importance and successful inclusion of a cryptobenthic fish component in ecological and biogeographical studies. © 2018 Valencia-Méndez et al. Generalized Neophobia: concept, theoretical model and measurement

Arturo Barraza Macías (2023, [Artículo, Artículo])

Objective: To build and validate the generalized neophobia scale and establish its prevalence and sociodemographic profile of the participants. Method: an instrumental and correlational study was carried out by applying the generalized neophobia scale to 517 people. Results: the scale has a reliability level that ranges between .79 and .88, the exploratory factor analysis reports a single factor that explains 69.29% of the total variance and the confirmatory factor analysis reports a perfect fit model; the prevalence in the surveyed population was 13.5% and it is women and younger people who report a higher level of neophobia. Conclusions: the theoretical-conceptual contributions of this research can be assessed as consistent and its empirical contribution can be considered as indicative since its main limitation is the selection of the sample determined by accessibility and availability.
