Haptic interfaces to identify digital markers of Autism Spectrum Disorder

The use of screening tools during infancy is crucial to identify children who are likely to have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); however, the current screening tests are based on questionnaires and observations that parents answer bases on their observations; however, the results might be subjective. In addition, most screening tests focus on the assessment of social and communication skills, disregard sensory skills, an area where parents often notice the first signals of ASD. In recent years, there has been growing interest in identifying digital markers of ASD that can support screening, particularly those that that can be used at any time and any place to speed up the screening process. So far, research on digital markers of ASD related to tactile processing has been little explored due to the lack of tools to assess it. The growth of haptic interfaces opens the possibility to explore tactile processing and identify digital markers of ASD. In this thesis, we propose to investigate the use of haptic interfaces to promote and collect tactile interactions that can reveal digital markers of ASD. To have a better understanding of haptic interfaces, in this thesis work we explore two types of haptic interface. A passive haptic interface called BendableSound, which features texture and spatial feedback; and an active haptic interface called Feel and Touch, which is a mobile game that uses vibrotactile patterns to provide feedback on children’s interactions. The results show that haptic interfaces have the potential to collect touch interactions and reveal digital markers that may be associated with ASD. In the first case, 37 neurotypical (NT) children and 22 children with ASD participated and interacted with BendableSound; the results show that there are differences between NT and ASD children in the width of tactile interactions, the force they apply, and the time they use to perform tactile interactions. In the second case, 36 NT children and 19 children with ASD participated and interacted with Feel and Touch; the results show that there are differences between NT and ASD children in terms of the tilt they produce on the mobile when performing tactile interactions, the total acceleration they produce, and the closeness to the center of the screen of their tactile interactions. The results of this thesis indicate that haptic interfaces have the ability to gather touch interactions and uncover digital markers associated with ASD. The findings of this ...

Rapid effects of marine reserves via larval dispersal

Richard Cudney Bueno (2009, [Artículo])

Marine reserves have been advocated worldwide as conservation and fishery management tools. It is argued that they can protect ecosystems and also benefit fisheries via density-dependent spillover of adults and enhanced larval dispersal into fishing areas. However, while evidence has shown that marine reserves can meet conservation targets, their effects on fisheries are less understood. In particular, the basic question of if and over what temporal and spatial scales reserves can benefit fished populations via larval dispersal remains unanswered. We tested predictions of a larval transport model for a marine reserve network in the Gulf of California, Mexico, via field oceanography and repeated density counts of recently settled juvenile commercial mollusks before and after reserve establishment. We show that local retention of larvae within a reserve network can take place with enhanced, but spatially-explicit, recruitment to local fisheries. Enhancement occurred rapidly (2 yrs), with up to a three-fold increase in density of juveniles found in fished areas at the downstream edge of the reserve network, but other fishing areas within the network were unaffected. These findings were consistent with our model predictions. Our findings underscore the potential benefits of protecting larval sources and show that enhancement in recruitment can be manifested rapidly. However, benefits can be markedly variable within a local seascape. Hence, effects of marine reserve networks, positive or negative, may be overlooked when only focusing on overall responses and not considering finer spatially-explicit responses within a reserve network and its adjacent fishing grounds. Our results therefore call for future research on marine reserves that addresses this variability in order to help frame appropriate scenarios for the spatial management scales of interest.

RICARDO PEREZ ENRIQUEZ NOE DIAZ VILORIA JOSE LUIS GUTIERREZ GONZALEZ ALEJANDRA ARCINIEGA DE LOS SANTOS ADRIANA MAX AGUILAR Pedro Cruz Hernández Fernando Aranceta Garza (2016, [Artículo])

"This is an integrative work of more than 10 years of research in population genetics of abalone in Mexico performed at CIBNOR. It shows how molecular tools have the potential to support abalone fisheries management through population genetics and forensic analyses. Microsatellite DNA markers were developed on blue (green for its name in English) Haliotis fulgens and yellow abalone (pink for its name in English) H. corrugata to be used for genetic differentiation on populations and for parentage analysis. The analysis of genetic structure on wild populations of both species revealed genetic homogeneity in the Pacific coast of the central region of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, with genetic differentiation on distant localities due to a limited gene flow as a result of reproduction isolation. From this result we suggest that no evidences were found supporting the management of the fishery based on individual abalone beds. Pink abalone shows lower genetic diversity than green abalone, possibly due to higher historical fishery exploitation. The parentage analysis suggested that larval retention within beds is reduced, indicating that neither broodstockaggregation nor the release of abalone larvae for stock enhancement are efficient strategies to increase recruitment in specific beds.

An analysis of the genetic profiles with the lysine gene allowed the identification of abalone species captured and processed in Mexico. The comparative analysis, based on the 18S gene, among abalone and other mollusks, detected canned product containing mollusks that are commercialized allegedly as abalone or ‘abalone type’, which could constitute a forensic tool in future legal disputes. This type of application can also be used with other edible products in which fraudulent practices are suspected either because of illegal catch or commercialization or substitution in processed products."

Transfers and land demand for housing: Evidence from a municipality in northwestern México

Nicolás Guadalupe Zúñiga Espinoza (2021, [Artículo, Artículo])

Objective: to analyze the destination of conditional transfers (TC) to finance public services on land managed for housing in a municipality in the Northwest of Mexico. Methodology: based on semi-structured interviews, analysis of documents and data consulted in Inegi, Coneval, Inafed, Municipal Governments of Guasave and State of Sinaloa, it was possible to develop this work for the period 2013 to June 2020. Results: the evidence indicates that of the 6.9-hectare surface managed for housing, 50 % of the lots are vacant and in only a part of them there are houses or unfinished constructions (17 %). It is more about an interest in fattening land and taking advantage of financing, with transfers, to introduce free public services such as electricity, water and drainage.

Isotope analysis in feathers of the Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) to infer its trophic ecology

The isotopic analysis of primary feathers using the isotopic ratios of δ13C and δ15N allowed the estimation of the breadth and overlap of the trophic niche of adult and fledgling least terns. Niche breadth was inferred through the standard ellipse area (SEAB) estimated by Bayesian methods. We found differences between the trophic niche of adults and fledglings, as adults presented mean SEAB values from 16.3‰2 to 28.4‰2 and fledglings from 44.8‰2 to 75.5‰2. This could be due to differences in the prey selected and the geographical location of the adults during the molt of the primaries. The overlap of these values among adults indicates similarity in prey selection and location between the adults of different colonies. Therefore, it was considered that the adults of some colonies could share a wintering site during the period of molt of the primary feathers. We characterized the variability of carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures during the sequential growth of primary feathers through generalized additive models and the variability between primaries using the anomalies of these signatures and the local mean for each colony. This allowed us to differentiate specific feeding strategies of individual least terns and the variability in their diet. The bibliographic search for potential migration and wintering sites found published maps of δ13C isotopic gradients in the Tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean that correspond to the δ13C distribution in primary feathers of the least tern, indicating a potential wintering area for this species.

In vitro Digestibility of Yarrowia lipolytica Yeast and Growth Performance in Whiteleg Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

ANA RUTH ALVAREZ SANCHEZ CLAUDIO HUMBERTO MEJIA RUIZ Héctor Gerardo Nolasco Soria Alberto Peña Rodríguez (2018, [Artículo])

"Marine yeasts used in aquaculture disease control can also be an important protein source for improving feeding and nutrition of crustaceans. Yarrowia lipolyticca has been studied for its capacity to secrete heterologous proteins and high content of unsaturated fatty acids, beta-glucan, and mannane polymers in the cell wall. We measured in vitro digestibility of Y. lipolyticca by whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei digestive enzymes, and an in vivo assay of Y. lipolytica in feed onwhiteleg shrimp growth. We found that digestive gland enzymes of shrimp digest Y. lipolytica, based on reduced optical density of a yeast suspension. Digestion was –0.00236 ± 0.00010 OD U min–1 for intact cells and –0.00325 ± 0.00010 OD U min–1 for lysed cells. Release of reducing sugars in intact cells (5.3940 ± 0.1713 μmol h–1), and lysed cells (0.8396 ± 0.2251 μmol h–1) was measured. Digestive gland treatment significantly reduced cell viability (near 100%), relative to the control. Electron microscopy shows that the cell wall of Y. lipolytica exposed to the digestive gland enzymes was severely damaged. Shrimp diet containing Y. lipolytica resulted in significantly higher weight gain and specific growth rate of whiteleg shrimp."

Petrology and isotope geochemistry of the La Vasca Alkaline Complex, northwestern Coahuila

At the La Vasca Alkaline Complex (LVAC), outcrops of igneous bodies with peralkaline affinity and eudialyte mineralization were reported, which were not previously considered within the regional magmatism regarding the Eastern Mexican Alkaline Province (EMAP). La Vasca was poorly documented and no link with this magmatic province was properly defined, and additionally, the eudialyte group minerals are of great interest due to its content of rare earth elements. In this work, petrographic descriptions, major and trace element, and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope geochemical analysis, as well as U-Pb zircon geochronology were carried out. At the LVAC, two groups of ferroan, alkaline granitoids were identified and classified according to their alumina saturation: metaluminous and peralkaline. A group of dikes, sills, and volcanic rocks at the neighboring locality of Ejido San Miguel show similarities with the metaluminous rocks, while the dikes and sills outcropping at the LVAC periphery are almost exclusively peralkaline. The metaluminous rocks show geochemical signatures of post-collisional and intraplate settings, while the peralkaline ones have intraplate signatures. Both groups show little crustal contamination, affinity to an OIB-type mantle source, and traversed a Precambrian to Phanerozoic basement related to the interior zone of the Ouachita suture. Zircons from the metaluminous rocks have dates of ca. 48 and 45 Ma, and the conditions of rock formation show that the peralkaline rocks are cogenetic. Rocks from the LVAC fit within the model of magma formation in the EMAP, in which it is proposed that the flat-slab roll-back of the Farallon Plate occurred due to the Hess conjugate tearing, causing asthenospheric upwelling and the melting of the subduction-modified lithospheric mantle. Concluding the tearing and foundering of the Hess conjugate, a metasomatized asthenospheric mantle begins to contribute to magma generation. The LVAC marks the extension of the EMAP in northwestern Coahuila.

Movements of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) at Cocos Island, Costa Rica and between oceanic islands in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Elena Nalesso (2019, [Artículo])

Many species of sharks form aggregations around oceanic islands, yet their levels of residency and their site specificity around these islands may vary. In some cases, the waters around oceanic islands have been designated as marine protected areas, yet the conservation value for threatened shark species will depend greatly on how much time they spend within these protected waters. Eighty-four scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini Griffith & Smith), were tagged with acoustic transmitters at Cocos Island between 2005–2013. The average residence index, expressed as a proportion of days present in our receiver array at the island over the entire monitoring period, was 0.52±0.31, implying that overall the sharks are strongly associated with the island. Residency was significantly greater at Alcyone, a shallow seamount located 3.6 km offshore from the main island, than at the other sites. Timing of presence at the receiver locations was mostly during daytime hours. Although only a single individual from Cocos was detected on a region-wide array, nine hammerheads tagged at Galapagos and Malpelo travelled to Cocos. The hammerheads tagged at Cocos were more resident than those visiting from elsewhere, suggesting that the Galapagos and Malpelo populations may use Cocos as a navigational waypoint or stopover during seasonal migrations to the coastal Central and South America. Our study demonstrates the importance of oceanic islands for this species, and shows that they may form a network of hotspots in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. © 2019 Nalesso et al.
