Metabolic syndrome (MS) has been associated with testicular damage. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a multisystemic disease that affects different organs, but its effect on the testes is unknown. A study analyzing germ cell involvement on BALB/c mice was carried out. A parallel comparative study was conducted that investigated alterations in the germinal epithelium of male humans that died from an unrelated acute event. The complete medical histories and histologic samples of the thoracic aorta, liver tissue, and testicular tissue from the deceased subjects were collected. The degree of germinal epithelial loss (DGEL) was evaluated and the clinical and histologic data were compared between individuals with and without NAFLD. The only metabolic or morphologic variable that caused a significant difference in the DGEL, in both the animal model and humans, was the presence of liver steatosis. The percentage of steatosis was also correlated with the percentage of the DGEL. In humans, steatosis (greater than 20%) increased the risk 12-fold for presenting with a severe DGEL (OR: 12.5; 95% CI [1.2, 128.9]; p = .03). There was no association with age above 50 years or MS components. Steatosis grade was also correlated with atherosclerosis grade. NAFLD was a strongly associated factor implicated in severe DGEL, as well as the testis was identified as a probable target organ for damage caused by the disease. his finding could result in the search for new approach strategies in the management of men with fertility problems. Further studies are required to confirm these results.

Offshore wind energy climate projection using UPSCALE climate data under the RCP8.5 emission scenario

MARKUS SEBASTIAN GROSS (2016, [Artículo])

In previous work, the authors demonstrated how data from climate simulations can be utilized to estimate regional wind power densities. In particular, it was shown that the quality of wind power densities, estimated from the UPSCALE global dataset in offshore regions of Mexico, compared well with regional high resolution studies. Additionally, a link between surface temperature and moist air density in the estimates was presented. UPSCALE is an acronym for UK on PRACE (the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe)-weather-resolving Simulations of Climate for globAL Environmental risk. The UPSCALE experiment was performed in 2012 by NCAS (National Centre for Atmospheric Science)- Climate, at the University of Reading and the UK Met Office Hadley Centre. The study included a 25.6-year, five-member ensemble simulation of the HadGEM3 global atmosphere, at 25km resolution for present climate conditions. The initial conditions for the ensemble runs were taken from consecutive days of a test configuration. In the present paper, the emphasis is placed on the single climate run for a potential future climate scenario in the UPSCALE experiment dataset, using the Representation Concentrations Pathways (RCP) 8.5 climate change scenario. Firstly, some tests were performed to ensure that the results using only one instantiation of the current climate dataset are as robust as possible within the constraints of the available data. In order to achieve this, an artificial time series over a longer sampling period was created. Then, it was shown that these longer time series provided almost the same results than the short ones, thus leading to the argument that the short time series is sufficient to capture the climate. Finally, with the confidence that one instantiation is sufficient, the future climate dataset was analysed to provide, for the first time, a projection of future changes in wind power resources using the UPSCALE dataset. It is hoped that this, in turn, will provide some guidance for wind power developers and policy makers to prepare and adapt for climate change impacts on wind energy production. Although offshore locations around Mexico were used as a case study, the dataset is global and hence the methodology presented can be readily applied at any desired location. © Copyright 2016 Gross, Magar. Leveraging the self-heating effect of ntc thermistor to detect its minimum coverage by a dispensed paste in the mass production process of temperature sensors

Saúl Alejandro Rodríguez Jiménez LEONOR ADRIANA CARDENAS ROBLEDO (2023, [Artículo])

This paper develops a device capable of confirming the minimum coverage area on a thermistor by a thermal paste dispensed and cured in the manufacturing process of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors to provide the required fixation in the presence of mechanical shock conditions. Such a device leverages the thermistor’s self-heating effect and the thermal conductivity of the paste to read the voltage drop from the sensor, which translates into paste coverage area. The methodology follows a synthesized procedure to develop equipment and processes, considering an early phase for concept confirmation to demonstrate the feasibility of the device development. In a later phase, the optimal parameters are calculated and set to the device for delivering the corresponding classification of the sensors during the test. Once launched in production, the device demonstrates high effectiveness in screening out the sensors with rejectable paste coverage area on the thermistor.

Surface hydrological contribution evaluation in the mountain block system of the Ojos Negros subbasin

This work was realized in the section of the Ojos Negros sub-basin, on the Sierra de Juárez mountain block (denominated Mountain Block System of the Ojos Negros Sub-Basin, SBMON), in the state of Baja California, Mexico. A hydrological runoff modeling was carried out for the period 1981-2020 to quantify the output hydrological contribution toward the Ojos Negros Valley. In compliance with the objective, a meteorological database consisting of the daily records of the meteorological stations and the NLDAS-2 surface forcing model was designed. A set of edaphological, forestry, geological, satellite, and topographical information was collected within the study area. Based on the collected information, two runoff models were developed using the Curve Number (CN) method from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The models were adjusted with the initial subtraction values, Ia, of 0.2 (model A) and 0.05 (model B). The generated series were compared with the results of the GCN250 model, based on soil and forestry data from the European Space Agency (ESA). Regionally, an annual runoff contribution of 9.2 Mm3 (GCN250), 10.9 Mm3 (model A), and 4.7 Mm3 (model B) was observed. The eastern section of the SBMON showed the highest infiltration potential, but it was also the area with the highest runoff production in all models. From the seasonal perspective, periods were identified where the runoff formed from summer rains exceeded that generated in the winter season. Based on the results obtained, the runoff contribution within the SBMON is significant, however, the subsurface and underground runoff processes may have an even more key role in the recharge toward the Ojos Negros Valley. It is recommended to monitor the variation of the moisture content in the SBMON soils, the annual and seasonal patterns of precipitation, as well as the water contribution from the snow melting in the Sierra de Juárez.

Predictive methodology for rear seat analysis in seat belt anchorage testings

A methodology is presented for analysis of a rear seat during the Safety Belt Anchorage test established in FMVSS 210 [1], which stands for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It is important to note that the safety belt reduces the risk of injury, and in the event of a collision, the belt helps distribute the force of the impact over a larger surface area, namely the metal structure of the seat. The goal is to minimize the risk of serious injuries. The goal of proposed methodology is to predict the performance as a function of displacement of the metal structure by using Finite Element Method (FEM). In this methodology, the minimum number of elements that make up the seat structure is analyzed in order to reduce analysis time, considering only the elements that play and have effect on the performance of the safety belt, thus generating a faster and more efficient analysis. By comparing the results obtained through Finite Element Method with the actual test, it was determined that the FEM method is effective in predicting the weak points of the metal structure that influence the displacement and/or deformation of the seat during the test.

Impact of automation on enhancing energy quality in grid-connected photovoltaic systems

Virgilio Alfonso Murillo Rodríguez NOE VILLA VILLASEÑOR José Manuel Robles Solís OA Guirette-Barbosa (2023, [Artículo])

Rapid growth in the integration of new consumers into the electricity sector, particularly in the industrial sector, has necessitated better control of the electricity supply and of the users’ op-erating conditions to guarantee an adequate quality of service as well as the unregulated dis-turbances that have been generated in the electrical network that can cause significant failures, breakdowns and interruptions, causing considerable expenses and economic losses. This research examines the characteristics of electrical variations in equipment within a company in the industrial sector, analyzes the impact generated within the electrical system according to the need for operation in manufacturing systems, and proposes a new solution through automation of the regulation elements to maintain an optimal system quality and prevent damage and equipment failures while offering a cost-effective model. The proposed solution is evaluated through a reliable simulation in ETAP (Energy Systems Modeling, Analysis and Optimization) software, which emulates the interaction of control elements and simulates the design of electric flow equipment operation. The results demonstrate an improvement in system performance in the presence of disturbances when two automation schemes are applied as well as the exclusive operation of the capacitor bank, which improves the total system current fluctuations and improves the power factor from 85.83% to 93.42%. Such a scheme also improves the waveform in the main power system; another improvement result is when simultaneously operating the voltage and current filter together with the PV system, further improving the current fluctuations, improving the power factor from 85.83% to 94.81%, achieving better stability and improving the quality of the waveform in the main power grid.
