"The need for studying sources of renewable energy is important starting from potential oleaginous plants. Jatropha curcas seed is characterized by its high oil content. In Mexico studies are focused on evaluating the physicochemical properties of J. curcas oil in wild plants cultivated in the southern region. The objective of this study was to evaluate these properties in three ecotypes of wild J. curcas of Sinaloa and their oil application in biodiesel production. The oil content of the germ was found to be 52 to 56%. Viscosity, density, acidity index, peroxide, iodine, and refraction showed no signif-icant differences in the seeds collected from the three ecotypes in our study. The most abundant saturated fatty acids were palmitic (4 to 6%) and stearic (3 to 4%). The most abundant unsaturated fatty acids were oleic (44 to 46%) and linoleic (42 to 44%). Physi-cochemical characteristics of J. curcas oil of Sinaloa specimens are similar to those of southern Mexico and other countries, which suggest that the germplasm of the north-western part of the country could be considered for conservation, rational utilization, and biodiesel production."

Simulación de los procesos geoquímicos en jales mineros
Yann Ramos-Arroyo ANNE MARGRETHE HANSEN HANSEN CHRISTINA DESIREE SIEBE GRABACH (2006, [Artículo])

The synthesis of blends that combine properties of two or more polymeric materials is increasingly investigated due to the versatility of the synthesis and its growing potential for many applications, including sustainability. Their characteristics are defined mainly by the synthesis conditions. Therefore, this paper details the synthesis process of easy-to-handle films using mixing method. The procedures and drawbacks found during the preparation of composite films are described. Polymeric compounds formed by the mixture of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are addressed, varying the concentration, and evaluating their impact on the piezoelectric capacity. Films were formed through the spin-coating technique and characterized by optical and holographic microscopes. The results showed that composites with a concentration of 50 wt.% or larger of PVDF in the blend acquire a morphology with a granular appearance, however at lower concentrations they present a homogeneous morphology similar to that of PMMA. A homogeneous distribution of PVDF in the PMMA stands out. However, excessive contents of PMMA are associated to peaks and non-uniformities detected like multicolored regions by digital holography. Controlled strength-strain laboratory tests allowed to evaluate the film blends performance. The results indicate noticeable improvements in voltage output for a composition 70wt% PVDF and 30 wt% PMMA.

Dual function of EDTA with silver nanoparticles for root canal treatment–A novel modification
JUAN MANUEL MARTINEZ ANDRADE (2018, [Artículo])
The chelating and antimicrobial capacity of a novel modification of 17% EDTA with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (EDTA-AgNPs) was evaluated in-vitro for root canal treatment (RCT). The EDTA-AgNPs solution was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, ?-potential and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Antimicrobial capacity was evaluated against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus in planktonic and biofilm cells by broth macrodilution (24 h) and XTT assays, (1, 10 and 30 min) respectively. The chelating capacity of EDTA-AgNPs was assessed indirectly (smear layer removal) and directly (demineralizing effect) in bovine dentin at two silver concentrations, 16 and 512 ?g/ ml at 1 and 10 minutes of exposure time. Smear layer removal was evaluated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The demineralizing effect was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), microhardness test (MH) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Synthesized AgNPs were quasi-spherical in shape with an average size of 13.09 ± 8.05 nm. 17% EDTA-AgNPs was effective to inhibit C. albicans and S. aureus in planktonic and biofilm cultures. The smear layer removal and demineralizing effect were similar between 17% EDTA-AgNPs and 17% EDTA treatments. The 17% EDTA-AgNPs solution proved to be an effective antimicrobial agent, and has a similar chelating capacity to 17% EDTA alone. These in-vitro studies strongly suggest that EDTA-AgNPs could be used for effective smear layer removal, having an antimicrobial effect at the same time during RCT. © 2018 Martinez-Andrade et al. "Soursop leaves are a source of phytochemical compounds, such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, hydrolyzable tannins, and acetogenins. These compounds can have several types of biological activities. Lactic acid bacteria can uptake phenolic compounds present in plants or fruits. The aim of the present work was to investigate the in vitro effect of hexane, acetone, methanolic, and aqueous extracts of soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) on the growth, motility, and biofilm formation of Lactobacillus casei, and to determine compounds related to growth. The minimum concentration promoting growth, motility (swimming, swarming, and twitching), and biofilm-forming capacity (crystal violet) were evaluated. The results showed the growth-promoting capacity of acetone and aqueous extracts at low doses 25–50 mg/L, and an inhibition in the four extracts at higher doses of 100 mg/L. The L. casei growth is related to ellagic acid, quercetin rhamnoside, kaempferol dihexoside, quercetin hexoside, secoisolariciresinol, and kaempferol hexoside-rhamnoside. Hexane extract increased the three types of motility, while aqueous maintained swimming and twitching motility similar to control. The four extracts inhibited the biofilm formation capacity."

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) and jatropha (Jatropha curcas) are potential sources to obtaining oil for industrial purposes and production of biodiesel (Masayuki, 1976; Masayuki and Takeshi, 1980). The objectives of this study were to analyze the morphological characteristics of seeds, oil content, physicochemical parameters of lipid, fatty acids composition and genetic variability of ecotypes of jojoba and jatropha in the Northwest of Mexico. Three ecotypes of jojoba named Indígena la Huerta, Sonoyta, and Todos Santos were evaluated. Sonoyta seeds ecotype has the highest weight, length and thickness (0.82g, 15.98 mm and 9.28 mm). Significant differences in color and seed moisture were observed. The number of seeds per kilogram was higher in the ecotype Indígena la Huerta (1217). The oil content was between 43, 44 and 49% in the 3 ecotypes. Viscosity, density, index of acidity, peroxide, yodine and refraction showed no significant differences. The most abundant fatty acids were the Eicosanoic (52 to 62.43%), oleic (13.80 to 27.36%) and Palmitic (6.43-9.70%). ISSR analysis on the accessions of S. chinensis showed a 54% polymorphic. On the other hand 3 ecotypes of Jatropha curcas Estación Dimas, El Quelite and La Campana were analyzed. No significant differences in weight, length, thickness, humidity and number of seeds per kg. The color of the seeds was 60.80 to 65.64 °Hue. The oil content of the germ of J. curcas was 52 to 56%. Viscosity, density, index of acidity, peroxide, iodine and refraction showed no significant differences in the seeds collected in the three ecotypes in study. The most abundant saturated fatty acids were oleic (44 to 46%), linoleic (42 to 44%) and palmitic (4-6%). SSR analysis of J. curcas accessions showed expected heterozygosity (He) of 0.7524, 0.7092 and 0.7956 in ecotypes of La Campana, Estación Dimas and El Quelite respectively. The wild germplasm of jatropha and jojoba is an alternative in the cosmetics and energy industry and represents a potential for activating the economy in arid and semi-arid regions of México.
